Chrome Trim Black out tape?????

I went to the local Pepboys and found a roll of trim blackout tape for around $6.00. It looks almost like a plain roll of black electrical tape. Anybody ever tried using black electrical tape to blackout the chrome trim around the window. I might try this to see how it looks.

I used the Trim Bright tape. And you're right it does kinda look like electrical tape, but the Trimbright had a paper backing on the adhesive side.

It is hard to do if you don'thave steady hands and a sharp razor blade. I had to 'practice' on 1 window first. It has shrunk a very small amount over the 2 years I have had it on. Not bad, but I'll probably replace it this summer.

I did it to my car and it turned out great. Like Blues said, if you have a steady hand and a good razor, it looks awesome.

I think most auto places probably have it. Got mine at Auto Zone. Look by all the pin-stripe stuff.

I went a head and tried it with electrical tape and it looked pretty good. I have rain deflectors and I tried it on the top where there is a little gap (small chrome trim appears) between the deflectors and on the small window on the passenger side. It looks alright but I'm afraid it might not stay on for a long time. I'm just testing it out....I'll buy the blackout tape later.

I also used the blackout tape and I think my car looks much much cleaner without that crappy chrome outline. It looks especially good if you got tints and a black car like in the above pic.
Just take your time and use a really sharp razor.

its funny cause when I had my 94 Altima..some of the rear window trim was cover with black tape .. I pulled mines off and I thought it look much cleaner (my car was silver)

altho since I brought a Black SE.. I like the way aliti19 and Bluesbrekr cars turned out.. of corase this is from distance shot. It looks nice black on black.
Now I have to decide if I want to do this as well but the chrome does match my lip for my rims. (I'll flip a coin later)

Just a Tip for you guys that are going to do this.. a Spray Bottle with some soap and water would help ..just clean the surface with alcohol and dry it.. Spray the soap and use the Adhesive tape to cover or wrap around it... Have a dry towel to dry up the extra water that you push out from the tape... a heat gun or a hair dryer would help the Tape form the shape in the curves. and a very Sharp Blade or xtaco knife. Good luck guys,

Yeah....I have a polished lip on my rims too and I kinda think they match the chrome trim. I used electrical tape on a small part of the trim to test it out and so far its still on there. The only bad think I guess about using electrical tape (or any other type of tape) is that when you remove it or if it falls off....theres going to be glue residue on the trim.

I"m not tooting my own horn here, but i did a kick a$$ job on my blacking out. The curves around the mirrors and windows turned out to be a work of art, even close up.

The only part that i'm going to redo this summer is the end pieces by the doors b/c the weather has shrunk them a little bit, and the chrome is showing slightly.

aight, i took that chrome off and happy i did.
it's pretty easy, no pics though. A hell of a lot better than taping the area up. I also used some black trim paint so it gives it a thick coat and feels like the black trim between the windows,

Details please! Let us know exactly what you used and how you did it. I wouldn't mind painting the chrome black.

Yeah....painting details would be good. Some guys have tried it and it didn't stick too well. It would scratch off pretty easily.

there are some nuts in the corners of the doors... one on each door is hidden by a flat black sticker. When you remove those nuts, slowly remove the weather stripping for the top. When you remove that, you will see screws holding up the weather stripping. Unscrew those. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, you will need to remove the door panel or the black panel on the inside of the car opposite of the mirror. Anyways, that is the only way i know of so you can remove the the trim that curves around the mirror. There is some type of rubber that attachs the top piece to the mirror piece. to remove the trim on the bottom of the window just remove the nut that was hidden by the sticker above the door locking mechanism and then gently pull up on the trim.

The rear section is tricky. Do the same on the top as you did for the front half but when you get near the back, you will have to remove the small window. There are two screws holding this window up and it is very easy for those screws to fall into the door so watch out.

PREP... if you have more painting skills than I do then by all means but in and correct me

Get 400 grit wet or dry and sand it dry to make it coarse. Then apply filling primer. this will fill in all the fine scratches. Then use "Trim Black" by SEM (my friend gave it to me so i dont know where he bought it from) and paint in light coats. This stuff will go on thick though. The finish is very very close to the window pillars. you can wetsand or clear coat or whatever. I chose to keep mine as is to match the window pillars but i fyou do have some uneveness you can wetsan with the 400 and then re-apply. Hope this helps,

DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible if you mess up or if your product doesnt turn out like mine. If you decide to use hot flourescent pink, thats on you buddy but i wouldn't mine seeing glow in the dark paint
