Timing Advance

I definitely had my doubts about this mod. End result: Watch out for this guy!! You should have it checked just to make sure that you are set at 15 versus a lower number. Mine was actually set at 14. IMO I got more oomph from this than I did from my underdrive pulley. Which was noticable. 2000 to 3000 rpm pulls now, no laggy feeling. And when you goose it hold on to the wheel. It has been really wet here so I didn't really get on it much but enough that my pessimist self was really happy with the diff. I will be dynoing here shortly after I put on my catback. We will see what the gain is then I suppose.

Well considering the gains of cat-backs in the past... just subtract 3 whp from his final number...

I didn't see your post... I'm perfectly happy with the 8 whp from my y-pipe and the -2 whp from my cat-back...

so did you get yours set to 15 or to 17 like so many others have been doing?

I didn't think that the timming advance affected the timming at higher RPM's? Doesn't it only affect the lower end of the RPM band? Therefore it wouldn't show a difference in peak #'s

NAh it is supposed to be at 15 mine was at 14 so I bumped it to 17. You just have to ask to make sure they check the idle again and then your throttle position. I.E. Open closed. That car is running like a raped ape. Headers are inbound. I am just waiting to hear from Brian when he gets the headers into the new production. I already have the ports welded into the B pipe. Also ordered the metallic substrate hi flo cat. Ready for the headers whenever..

You notice it more in the low band but the car is VERY eager to run at any rpm. I noticed my lag area in the middle is a bit more pronounced then VIAS kicks and away we go. I think the lag was aggravated by the A/F mix being richer after the advance.

Oh lol this dealership had told me no in the past. I took all my info gleaned from the craniums of my fellow .orgers and bullied the poor guy. I definitely had him outgunned. " Well if you check your Nissan FSM you will see.........." I had a great time

I moved my advance from 15 to 17 a couple of weeks ago at the local dealership. They tried to tell me that my Y2K max would not hold the advance in the ECU. I kept pressing the Service Manager and one of his Nissan Trained Technicians, to make the change based on communication across this site. They grabbed the Consult II, made the change, check to make sure it held in the memory and thanked me for giving them a little training. They did the timing advance at no charge. I can say it has made a difference in my Y2K with 117K miles on it. Probably one of the quickest ways to improve your low power band performance.

Could you elaborate on this?

I have the FSM for my 2K2 and I'll be darned if I can find anything in there that outlines the specific procedure to change the base ignition timing. I can find several references to 15 +/- 5 degrees BTDC, but nothing that says how to change it.

I would like to be able to go to my dealer and when they tell me they can't do it, refer them to page XX in the FSM for instructions.....if only I could find it.

If you can't dazzle em with your brilliance, baffle them with your bull@#$!. Just say I know the factory presets for that motor are 15 degr. BTDC +- 2 degr. You are not asking them to take it out of factory guidelines. Tell them you only run 93 gas and you want to get the most bang out of your gas. Mine was set below factory guidelines, I asked for a simple modification that is within Nissan specs in order to get the most performance out of my performance car.

Had mine advanced yesterday from 14 to 17 by a tech I know at the dealership. I noticed a positive change in responsiveness throughout the rpm band, even with the AC on.

I had this done about a week ago. Advanced timing 2 degrees to 17 and altered the idle position from 650 to 750. I like what it has done to my car so far. My idle feels smoother and my car also seems to be shifting smoother as I have an auto tranny. I haven't really noticed a significant gain in MPG but we'll see.

91 gas is about the best I can find in my neck of the woods so they'd know I was a liar if I told them I only ran 93........wait - this is the Nissan dealership, maybe they wouldn't know.

I have called several stealers to get this done and they all tell me it is not possible or that it will automatically retard itself again. Is this true or are they dumb?

Definitely can be done. The 4th gens spit the code out but the 2002 and up ECU is fine. NYPDarnold posted a print out instruction post. Print that out. It even says for those of you dealing with clueless dealerships at the top. They love that. Run a search for Timing advance in this forum and go in armed with info and don't take no. It is within Nissan specs.

I found this on a website and thought it interesting:

Over-advanced timing: If an improper grade of fuel is used combined with an over-advanced timing setting, the effects of detonation can damage the engine. Detonation is when the air/fuel mixture combusts too early or too quickly during the compression stroke. The flame front collides with the upward-stroking piston. Pressure in the cylinder becomes increasingly high. Temperature rises to extremely dangerous levels. This results in engine damage.

I had mine advanced about a month ago, my buddy has an '02 and has had this mod for about 8months and has yet to have a problem, car definatly runs allot smoother, and allot better pick-up from 2800 up to redline. only downside is you absolutly have to run premium, but chances are if you care about performance, ur running it anyway

If you send out your ECU to adjust your engine's air/gas mixture, etc. How would the upgraded ECU handle the advanced timing?
