tried to get timing advance

went to a dealer and asked if they could change the timing advance to 17 degrees and the guy told me it would be $95 even after arguing he would not back down.... just wondering if any of you had to pay anything or if you got it somewhere else??

the dealer I went to yesterday first said it couldn't be done...then I corrected them....then they said they "wouldn't" do it, because it's a liability issue....then I pointed out 17 degrees is within Nissan factory spec.....then they said they didn't know how to do it....then I said it could be easily done on their Consult II....then they said, "sorry, no"..

so I left.

Find a tech that knows how to do it and slip him a $20. Screw the service associates.

that charge is simply the minimum hourly rate nissan charges. it's normal for them to get every last penny out of you. agreed though, grab a tech, throw him some money and see if he can borrow that consult II. btw, it is rather easy. key note, when you advance timing, it bumps up the idle, so you need to have them readjust the idle as well. only goes up about 100-150rpms or so (625 is stock idle)

Any feedback on this query? What are the advantages of advancing the timing?

I believe bumping up the timing improves performance and possibly fuel economy. Does anyone know by how much? Would it make much difference on a 95 Maxima?

IgS, I got mine done at Crystal Lake Nissan for $20. Schaumburg is closer to you and I know for a fact that Woodfield Nissan will do it for the same amount.

your point being??...
my point is when they advance the timing, idle increases, so they SHOULD recalibrate....nothing more..

forces you to stick to a higher octane gas, may cause pinging....a lot of factors stop nissan from making this the OEM standard.

high altitudes and lack of good fuel would be reasons for me not to do it, so if you live in the boonies somewhere maybe it's not a good idea. i live at sea level and theres a place nearby that sells 100octane PUMP....weird huh, i'm never blowing my money on that though. tangent, yea sorry, but thats my two cents.

it is possible but you need access to the consult 2 to reset back to 14-15 btdc.

IgS... we've posted a few times on this. Go to Woodfield Nissan in Schaumburg and, if possible, talk to Pauly (he works in the afternoons). He'll charge you like $20 for it.

We are doing his timing and another Maximas tonite At the same time we adjust base idle to stock, and erease the self-learn on the ECU to 0 so that the ECU can re-adjust to your driving habbits. 3.5Ls are all set at 14 deg, 3.0Ls are at 15 deg.

Only way of changing it back to stock is with the Consult, even if you clear the ECU with a normal scanner the timing setting will STILL be advanced- IF it was advanced in the 1st place.

yeah as i was getting my BLOSE radio replaced for the second time in 8K miles today, i asked them if they could do this and here's how it went:
me: "i was wondering how much it would cost to get my timing advanced to 17 degrees "
service manager: "was yours adjusted down?"
me: no, the factory timing is 15 degrees BTDC and i wanted to advance it to 17
SM: it will just reset itself
me: well i use 93 octane gas, so i don't think it will cause pinging, so there shouldn't be a problem. I've heard of several people doing the same thing and it sticks
SM: ::silent, thinking:: that'll cost you $78
me: ok, did you just pull that number out of your head just to get me to shut up about it?
SM: no, it will cost you 2 hours of labor
me: to plug in a machine for 2 minutes?
SM: ::without blinking:: yes

well needless to say, i didn't go for it...i can't understand how these people can possibly justify that taking a couple minutes to plug in a machine and press some buttons can cost anything over $20...it's just rediculous...i guess i'll just have to look around at some other dealers...

Will the "Throttle Position Learning" procedure as per the technosquare website reset the idle back to stock once timing is advanced, or does it have to be done with the Consult II?
