(Another) SES, 02 GLE

02' GLE, ~50K, well maintained, no mods.
About an hour ago I'm driving normally on the highway ~70mph, car kicks down to 3rd with no performance impact (I shifted back up manually) then [the weird part], I notice the tach is sitting at "0 RPMs". Drive about 5 miles, take her off the highway and shut it off. Waited for a few minutes, re-started normally, ran for about 60 secs (tach was working) then it shut-off. Restarted after maybe 10 secs of hard-cranking (not normal) but no tach and no SES. drove away and about 2-3 minutes later, SES light came on hard and still no tach.
Any ideas other than "pull the code" (I will do that next)? Thanks in advance.
