No, his parents exercised poor judgement. Yes, a full ride scholarship is a big thing. But to buy a 2001 BMW M3 as a reward is ridiculous. Insurance will be horrible. If he takes it to college, he will be resented for having it. People will **** with it. A new Civic or Focus or something not as flashy would have achieved the same end.

And second, there's nothing wrong with modding cars. I still get the same MPG from when I first bought the car and i've actually improved many aspects of the car.
It's good to see that you are trying to "understand" why people do these things, but the way you came off made you look like an a$$hole imo. Especially since you've never really worked on a car, so you really do not have any background to understand these things.

Dang you guys are giving him a hard time. He spoke his mind. But he forgot that most people in here probably bought the max thinking it to be a daily driver until they find a car to truely spend money on. Then they found the .org or saw a hooked up max and was like that is what they wanted to do. That is what I had. I actually hated my maxima before the .org. Then I saw mods and such and became a maxima enthusiast. I know that there are a few maxima's that can perform just as well as a M3. But comparing that of a FWD and RWD app is kinda useless. Plus some of us live in the northern areas of the US and Canada so we can't have just a good weather car as that is what the north makes our cars out to be. We need a car that can handle the weather and give us a taste of freedom and a way of letting us calm down during a stressful day (even though the max can be responsible for that at sometimes).
P.S. When I was 17 I remember saying that I was gonna use my max to get by. Now it's gonna be a project car for a while since I have it mechanically sane for the first time since forever. Maximahunty - your points about modding - even performance modding - are null and void. If you weren't 17 and didn't get life handed to you on a silver platter, you would understand that those of us who mod our rides (whatever rides that may be - not just Maximas) do it for the fun of it. It's our hobby. It's something that we do that brings joy in our life, just like what MaxedOut2003 said. As a matter of fact, before I had my 2000 Maxima, I owned a 98 Lexus GS300, and traded it in for a 00 Lexus GS400 because of the V8, but was still bored with the car because there was nothing else to do with it except look at it and take pictures (see below). With my Maxima, there are SO many mods out there for it (granted, not as much as Civics or Accords), that I can always find something to do, most of the time very INEXPENSIVELY. As a matter of fact, the biggest performance mod I can do other than supercharge it is the VIAS mod - which will cost me $2.50 for JB Weld - and I will gain upwards of 30HP. Plus, it will take me a few hours and I'll learn new things in the process about my car.
What do you know about your M3? Are there forums that are anything close to this one online? I highly doubt it, because most people in the world do not buy and mod M3's. It's a car very similar to the Lexus cars I had, where the owners are usually mid-30's professionals who know nothing about driving or modding, and just want a cool car. Those are reasons that I'm glad I sold the two Lexus cars that I had, and went with the Maxima. I think that you're going to find that the 'cool' factor of the M3 will wear off soon.

We are auto-enthusiasts on this site. We will never be content with "stock" performance. I saved up and purchased my Maxima as a functional and fast four door family car. I modified it to suite my tastes like many others on here. When you come here bragging about how spoiled you are, you don't impress anyone. Then you bring that noise of ridiculing those that modify their car? Don't expect sympathy or understanding from any of us. Obviously you are not a car enthusiast and you should be driving something that matches your lifestyle like a Beetle 
alright everyone, i think this has gone too far....the original thread was for the guy who sadly got rear-ended by some dumb woman, and now has to suffer without his car for a while, then it turned into this.....as i was reading through it, all i could see was everyone posting a short one to two line sorry note for ride2kmax, then a 2 paragraph flame toward hunty....now i agree with what everyone is saying, and what hunty said was out of line and everything, but now what ya'll are posting (as in: everyone in the 5th gen forums and even a 6th gen

The point of a car is to get your from point A to point B, granted my parents felt like getting me much nicer of a car than I expected. But anyways for whoever said there are probably not any M3 forums out there, here is one http://www.m3forum.com/

Being 17 and driving an M3 daddy bought really gives you alot of argumentative leverage here. Stop trying to "understand" everybody, be glad your parents take care of you, and keep your criticisms to yourself, otherwise you will get dissed by this entire thread, as i am doing. That's what it is.

All right every one i had my car crash i still dont know if is going to be able to get fix or not Yesterday a body shop took a look at it and they said that with around 2000 to 3000 could be fix now i just have to see what insurance say's.

To Ride2kMax: Sucks that your car got banged up by someone who was completely negligent in their responsibilities as a driver. Hope that you get something else nice without going into huge debt doing so.
I've had my share of BMW's, all used (2002, 320i, 325i). Yuppie vehicles which are not cost effective for modding. You just drive them, wash them, admire them and then garage them. Just the out-of-warranty parts and maintenance is really expensive. Trust me I know. I chose the Maxima over a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Acura because it is easy to work on, parts are readily available, and most importantly, I can mod the vehicle myself and then enjoy the fruits of my labor while drinking a cold one. It is a hobbie I enjoy and this forum makes it a joy because we share our ideas, experiences, either good or bad. The value of vehicle ownership does not hit you until you are the one who has to buy it, pay it, insure it, and maintain it. Let the young one enjoy his BMW which I know he has earned. I am sure he meant no harm with his comments. I know as a parent I will reward my son well if he excels as a student and human being. Thats my two cents.

IM young also, but i mean come on, i made a great accomplishment like you did HUnter, I also was given a chance to buy something, like a brand new is300... But when i seent my cousin hook up her max, i fell in love and helped pay for the max i got now... I already started modding, and hopefully it stays with me for a very long time because i got big plans for it.. All in all, there was no need to try to come at ppl for modding "used" cars, they mod it to there liking, to have fun, and something to do.. Trust me, when you take time to mod something, when your done, you look at it like DAMN, I can do that with my hands, lol then your just waiting to do a next project...

u actually have it wrong. Most here including myself dont hate honda's cause they invest 3 times the money into their car vs the worth of the car. In fact, people that do that get a lot of respect from us cause in most cases they pwn us front to back. I would shake the hand of someone owning a hatch with a clean turbo setup that cost twice the amount of the car but the car runs 11's or something. The things we hate is how people rice out their cars and that doesnt apply only to honda's, its just most common with them. When we say rice we mean mods that either sound like sh*t, look like sh*t or dont do sh*t. Very raspy exhausts, indiglo light mufflers, etc.
Whether u want to believe it or not, as much as i love the M3 (wish i could afford it), a boosted maxima with maybe 4k in performance mods is not only WAY cheaper than a used M3 but also faster and more fun. omg, alright already!! this thread has been dragging on forever just because of one person's comment!! geez, just give it up already...if the original poster wants to bring it up again to give everyone an update, he can, but it's just stupid that everyone has been flaming this one person for this long! everyone is saying the exact same thing so just give it a rest!
