NO! It retains moisture, dirt, and salt and will result in catastrophic failure to the flex section. I was advised by two racing shops that exhaust wrap is intended for racing applications and not to use it on a daily driver. Put the thought out of your mind. I know there is a write-up on motorvate.ca about it, but they fail to provide a more recent opinion on its effect on the y-pipe over time. Avoid it like the plague!

makes sense, thanks for the help!

another quick question then, the y-pipe i have has a little damage to the flex section, the spring is fine but the metal wires around it a ripped in one point, not a lot of damage. Should i just leave it as it is, or can i do something?

Maybe there is something that can be used to mend it that is heat resistant, but not exhaust wrap. Is there anything like a duct tape that would work? I suggest you phone a shop or two that specialize in exhaust work. Start with Midas Muffler and go from there.

Why not heat wrap it? I did it to mine and my flex section is fine, if you do heat wrap it dont be scrared if you see smoke comeing out at first just the wrap setting in.

yea but i guess what rmurdoch was saying is, over time it will accumulate moisture and salt and that will mess up the metal of the pipe

Not a bad point but since exhaust pipe gets hot anytime the heat wrap gets wet it should evaporate from the heat of the exhaust.

i had it on my old cattman y pipe with no issues for about 1.5 years. of course, we do not have much if any road salt but plenty of moisture. i currently have the flex of my hotshot headers wrapped and have not had any issues for over 9 months.

Hey guys,

I work for a comapany that makes exhaust treatment systems for diesel engines, the company in the web link below provided us with removable insulation blankets. they are not the cheapest, but if you think that the wrap will really help, maybe give this a try. With it being removable, you can clean the area as needed.
