let the PCV dump the oil to intake, why not re-route the oil back to the dipstick (engine)? just curious....

 

Not a bad idea but what are you going to do with your dipstick?

 

Rerouting it to the dipstick doesn't get rid of the pressure that it's trying to bleed off. I think it would throw a check engine light.

 

heres my setup, did it today morning and already collected a bit of oil, i was a bit rough on the car to see if it really works, and yes it does. husky general purpose filter half a meter of fuel injector hose and the trick was done(i kept the old hose attached to the intake m.)

I searched on the Home Depot website but couldn't find it...

Here's a cheaper glass one(no guard). It also has smaller pipe fittings. Keep in mind, that if you live in the sticks, most auto parts store (like NAPA) stock air/oil separators. They're used a lot on farm equipment. You might want to check local.

Alright, I bought one at Lowe's and just installed it. Went for a little ride +/- 20 miles, and most of the pinging around 2000rpm is now gone

Question: Those of you who have the catch can, what do you do with the oil in the catch can? Dump it or pour it back in the engine (if it's clean of course...)

 

I liked the Home Depot catch can idea. So I did this mod with a Harbor Freight mini air filter (nice little unit for $7.00) for about $15.00 total in parts. I did mine a little differently and mounted the filter on the inlet snorkel, used 1/4" nylon elbows, and some hose mounts (attached to the VIAS), spring clamps and misc. screws from Lowes. The way Nissan routed the factory hoses was almost perfect for this mod. The biggest expense/problem was the hose, I tried the cheapo plastic stuff but that didn't work out so well. It collapsed as soon as the engine warmed up. Anyways here's some pics.

 

I've had the PCV catch can installed for about a month now. One interesting side benefit I found is that it seems to have stopped my car from throwing pre-cat/O2 sensor codes. Before the catch can was installed I'd get a SES light about once a week that would go off again in a few days. So far none since. But I probably just jinxed myself.

 

Why are people with the 3.0 doing this mod?!

This is interesting. I had a P0430 code for the longest which is a precat inefficiency code and after installing my home made catch can, no more code. My car is for a 3.5L.

 

As I stated. Same thing for me, so maybe it's not just a coincidence.

 

Not having the cel is wonderful but damn! I considered having it on as a sign to get headers sooner rather than later. My car is happy as is. Great power and runs perfectly. I would hate to screw it all up by installing headers and dealing with the secondary o2 sensors. I really need to ride in someone's car that has headers installed so I can feel the difference for myself. I am so sick of only reading about it or watching youtube videos. I'm done rambling now.

 

You do know that almost every car on the street has a pcv system and they mostly all get blow-by. This isn't a 3.5 maxima thing, ppl have been doing this for years before the 3.5 existed.

 

Mine too! But everything from the cat forward is rusting out and on borrowed time. I've got Cattman Headers/Y-Pipe/FastCat in the garage waiting to be installed this spring. Since it was roughly $100 more than a questionable fit/quality CATCO stainless replacement system and MUCH cheaper than OEM.
I'll let you know HONESTLY how different it is. From a daily driver perspective.

It's probably because oil consumption issues are more pronounced on the 3.5L.

 

I'm lucky in that my car has only been a Florida resident. The rust would definitely be enough to convince me to change out the entire exhaust. How is that srs system holding up for you? Who knows, maybe you'll be jumping on the Cattman 3" band wagon after installing their headers. Look forward to hearing about the install this spring. Based on your posts, I respect your opinions and thoughts. My mods have been aimed more toward making the car more comfortable and sportier at the same time. For that reason I am going to try Knights poly side motor mounts and then the torque link or es front/rear mount insert. Sounds like having all of those mods will cause too much of a drop in my daily driver comfort level.

 

We're on the same page. The SRS will be adequate and I think better for a VQ30DE-K 4A/T daily driver. The only change might be a longer resonator if the headers etc. make the exhaust too loud/obnoxious. Same for the intake, an Apexi drop in filter and "Cool Air Diverter" mod at the snorkel to keep IAT temps as low as possible, for top efficiency on the OEM setup. I ordered a set of 'Knights' bushings too. Just to keep the motor/tranny positioned properly and take the load off the electric mounts.

For only $19 shipped, and it looks better and hold more than a compressor water trap, I don't think I could go wrong.

 

^^There is no filter in that catch can. Google 'Ebay catch can review" if you dont believe me

 

I used a craftsman compressor water separator. It has a larger reservoir to hold more oil and its built to last. I found it at sears for $20.

I hear about these filling up fast, how often are you suppose to service these or empty them or w.e?

 

The price is right but you will have to use proper hose as the one supplied in that kit looks like cheap plastic that will not with stand the heat of the oil over time.

 

Also the vacum pressure, cheap plastic will collapse

 

I'm not finding anything on this specific one but it was a good read. It does look like they are farely easy to add some type of filtering medium into the can though. I'll have to take a better look at it when it comes in, I ordered it last night. Either way, it should reduce the amount of oil getting into my intake, maybe not completely, but at least reduce.

Yeah I'm gonna go and get some fuel hose to use instead, it doesn't look too "quality" I agree.

 

The small $7.00 Harbor Freight unit I used takes roughly 3 weeks to get ~2/3 full on my VQ30DE-K. I empty the oil into a small clean (Ny-Quil) cup, pour it back into the engine, no-problem.
