High Cost of Cabin Air Filters

Everyone

The cheapest you can find a Nissan cabin air filter is about $40 plus shipping. I negotiated mine down to $40 at the dealer.

What is interesting is the the Altima and 2004-2005 Maxima cabin air filter from Nissan is under $30.

So, I went on-line to check for independent manufacturers. Purolator and Fram DO NOT make one!

Several places sell non-Nissan filters for about $50 (Drivewire). I found one place that has a 2k4-2k5 Maxima cabin filter for $8 .

For our Maxima's, RockAuto has a ATP RA9 for $21.79 plus $5.40 to ship it. Brand unknown. That is an on-line price.

Defeats the whole purpose of cabin air filters because at $90 plus tax to change one at the stealer, all the wind is knocked out of you when you get the bill. No need to breathe any more......

Thanks

Yeah, the cost of a new one is pretty high. If you have the factory filter, it can be gently washed and re-used, though.

I heard of people using a home furnace filter pad (cheap at Home Depot, etc.) and cutting/fabricating it out to fit on the Max. Does anyone have any more specifics?

How necessary is it to change this filter?

I've had my car for 4 years and have never changed it and have not noticed any problems with the air in the cabin.

But a clean one can always improve efficiency. I am thinking of getting a new one...but $40 for a filter?

I have a 2001...i changed my in cabin filter for the first time 3months ago. A TON of leaves, pine needles, and bugs fell out. I recommend you change yours too.can't hurt. I washed mine with hot water, soap, and a air compressor, and put it back in

My dealer charges $33 IIRC (Baker-Jackson in Houston), and I'd guess that DAVEB's price is even less at South Point Nissan in Austin.

Also, replacing the cabin air filter took me about 30 minutes the first time, and about ten minutes last time - it's very easy, especially using the instructions and how-tos on the org.

It's a LOT easier to just remove the glove box assembly. 6 screws total.

i looked in my glove box and there's no sticker that would indicate i have an cabin air filter. are all maximas capable of cabin air filters? or is an option that has to be installed at the dealer?

5th gen - optional, 5.5 gen - standard.
I used a 3m FilTrete filter from Home Depot, and just cut it to size. Its a harmonica type filter, the folds of the filter paper are not as often as the OEM, but then again, this filter was $15, and i can cut about 6 more maxima-sized filters from it. It is not a perfect fit, because it's home-made, but after this winter i will take it out and see how much stuff was trapped in it. My 2 year old oem filter had TONNS of dust and leaves in it. I would definetely recommend cleaning/replacing it every 6 months or a year.

According to Housecor's site, all 5th Gens are equipped for it, but not all have it. Not sure how that works, but that would imply to me that you could buy one and just stick it there in if ya don't have one already. Like chr0nos said, those things get filthy, so the sooner ya do this the better.

When i first brought my 02 and had the dealer service for the dim light cel. They asked me if i wanted to change the cabin filter. I figured what the hell. How much could the damn filter cost. Picked up car and got a bill for 125.00 dollars. Last time i ever let them change my filter and the cost of the part itself is outragous.........I change mine once a year

You could always go out on a limb and.......Drive the car with NO in-cabin microfilter.

Funny how we managed to make it all these hundred years or so driving with no cabin filter, yet now it is a necessity. I suppose cars have evolved into airtight bubbles filled with potentially hazardous allergens and pathogens. You probably introduce more dust into the car driving 10 miles with the window down than this thing could filter out in a year.

Shouldn't hurt the car at all, but your life could be cut short by several minutes toward the end.

funny how we used to use leaded gas, and cabeurators, and tires that were filled with rubber instead of air. and manual windshield wipers that hat to be turned by hand. and had to crank the engine to get it to turn on.
this is just a nice improvement, it may not be nessessary, but it does help contain the dust inside the car. my dashboard is way cleaner witht this filter, than my othe car, that did not have it.

I just called a dealer close to my work. They are asking $48 plus tax. I guess I pick it up from them. :'(

I bought one for that price the other day because I didn't want to wait for it to be shipped here from Courtesy or Dave B, where you could probably get it cheaper than that.

I was quoted $40.14 for a Cabin Filter from DAVEB. The dealer where I get discounts from is a little higher in price. I guess $40 is the norm for these filters.

Wonder if you could cut this to fit in there:
http://www.unifilter.com/accessory-catalog.htm
Seems pretty cheap (cheaper than $40) and would probably do the job well enough. Like these guys said, we did without for a long time, so anything is better than nothing.

If I hadn't recently gotten a Monsterflow filter, I would buy one of their cone filters for the intake. It's what Comptech uses for their Acura intakes.

6-th Generation Microfilter

Does anyone have instructions on how to replace the microfilter in 2006 Maxima?

I've taken the glove box out, but can't remove the two latches at the front cover of the filter.

Please help.
