I have not done the reprogramming yet... The mechanic at the dealership that is supposed to do it for me on the side had a few things come up on the days we had agreed to do it on (his car broke down so he had to work on it instead) but hopefully this weekend we'll make it... I will post once I get it done... Otherwise, the light keeps going on and off with the same P0140... Comes on for a few days then goes off again for a few days and so on...

Bad o2 sensor. The po140 is that the sensor is not responding.l I just replaced mine last week for this. I did not pass emmissions test. I have an Auterra reader and at start up the sensor was reading as it should, .2 to .8 volts or so. Then at speed of 45 MPH + for 2 min. the sensor sits at .25 volts. That is the FSM spec, that it go to at least .56 volts or higher while running at 43 MPH + for 2 min.
I also have a warpspeedy Y, and removed it after I did Emissions the second time, thinking it was that. Still failed. (Catalyst not ready). So I put in the new sensor from dealer, all codes gone, all tests pass, will do emissions this Friday.
Also, the reason that the codes comes and goes, as mine did, is the car takes time to do the test, usually about 500 miles or so. So you can clear it and then it come back a week later.
The only way to tell if yoru sensor is bad it to watch it real time. Maybe check it with an ohm meter, but not sure of what values you should get. Most likely signal to ground of low ohms, maybe 5-10, and then as you heat it up it would change.
Also as far as the reprogram, it takes about 45 min. Cannot do it in a parking lot. They have to download the software from Nissan, and then dump it into the car, and TOUCH NOTHING WHILE IT IS REPROGRAMMING! a window switch touched while reprogramming will fry the ECM.
You can do the timing advance in the lot for $20 with the consult II.
also when I pass emisisons I will take off stock and put on the Y to see if I get the same tests not ready in the Auterra.

P0138 due ECM issue with Infiniti I30
I am having Infiniti I30, 2001 model so I could corelate my problem with Mixama. Recently I happen to have 60,000 miles service from 3rd party and he noticed that my dashboard is showing service engine light on.
His computer indicated it as an Oxygen Sensors issue with DTC P0138/P0139.
Infiniti's "Technical Service Bulletin" is talking about that (ITB02-027A). As per my automobile technician's advice I approached the dealership and they denied to replace O2 Sensors w/o hafty charge. As per them it is convered only under 60K or 4Years regular warranty and not under ECM (80K) warranty. They agreed to programme it w/o any cost though.
At this point car needs both read Oxygen Sensors (HO2S2) replacement and later programming, and dealership (Austin,TX) is charging nearly 450-500$ for that !
I have approached same 3rd party mechanic if he can replace it for me and I will get the quote in day or so. If it works out I will ask Infiniti to program it for me. I am still looking around expense of 300$ or so.
But overall experience with Infiniti is not very pleasing so far. I believe, I will opt for Honda or Toyota for future purchase given its low maintenance expense.

Thanks for the tip! I solved my probs a while back... I am outside all warranties now but touch wood, no probs for a while, coming to 100K mark now

Igzy, how did you finally solve your problem in the end? Was it just the ECM reprogramming after the sensor was replaced?
My Maxima 2000, 65,000km, has P038 and 039 codes as well, also in Canada. I guess no warranty for anything now.
I have read horror stories about coils needeing to be replaced. Are these related?

Actually, I didn't write it down, I believe they were both 038 and 039. What is the difference?
My doubt is do I take it to my mechanic to replace the rear sensor and have the reset, or do I have to go to the dealer and pay 2X or 3X...
Also, I have had a little engine ping noise since day 1. I mentioned it during the very first scheduled maintenance, and they said it was normal, but my mechanic says it is not. He also thinks the engine does not have the power it should and there is a lag when accelerating suddenly. I didn't notice too much because I drive it 'soft', but I still get very good gas mileage (~10km with 1 litre).

My baby has over 102,000 miles on it. I just got code p0138 and p0139 both rear 02 sensors. Knowing how these maximas' have problems with coils, maf sensors and 02 sensors. I got one off Of E-Bay a while back and just ordered another yesterday, from Dave B. The Red one. I know it's a pain in the buns to get at but it could be done.Once, I get them on. I'll take it to the dealer for the reprogramming. Oh? Ligth Is On..........I'll give you an up-date once it's all done.

Looks like I'm having the same issue with my 2000SE.
Had the CEL come on about a month ago or so, 4th cylinder misfiring-replaced all of the original ignition coils-light went away. Then yesterday, CEL came back on and had the codes pulled at a local AutoZone. PO140 -so I'm thinking I need to replace the O2 sensors. I know I have to replace my stock rusty y-pipe, and I'm thinking of replacing the sensors at that time, but this is really pissing me off!!!!
I'm beginning to hate my car!

Hi, Is there a requirement to have the ECM updated after replacing the O2 sensors? I am planning on having the ECM updated followed by the O2 sensor replacement. I will then clear the codes. Is there any problem with doing it in this order?
Thanks,
Steve
