Problem with paint job from body ship.

High guys. I need some help please. I was in an accident and just got my car from the body shop. They put on a new rear bumbper... Now for some reason the margins are perfectly lined up. Like n the sdes right above the rear wheel where there is a space between the bumpe and the car, the new bumper is not flush with the rest of the car and it sticks out a bit. They tightened some screws but I can still tell that the cars bumper has been changed because it doesnt line up exactly. Is it normal?

Also they had to repaint the side of the car right below the doors. Now my paint is already peeling and they said they will do it over. It looks like they painted right over the old paint and did not bother removing and priming the old paint. Is this normal? Can you guys gimme the procedure of what should be done so that I can tell them what they should have done and whats wrong with it?

did they use a new OEM bumper? Some use aftermarket or used OEM and they can have fitment issues. If you dont know, ask and if they used either of the two make them redo it with a new OEM part, they will just bill the insurance company.

You pay all that money for insurance! Go back and demand a new OEM bumper with a new paint job that is plush with the whole car's pre-accident color. Trust me, insurance won't have any beef with that.

unless the car is an 04 or 05, they WILL use aftermarket bumper...Look at your insurance claim they sent you(a copy) it has the work order and such(the stuff they fixed). It will clearly say on the bottom that if the car is more than 3 ears old, they have the right to use aftermarket parts becuase they are much cheaper. I assume u have an 03 or older so you do not apply. I used to work at a local insurance company and i know how they save every penny

What about a 2003 that was purchased in July 2003 for example. It would be 2 years from the purchase date at this time.

When insurance companies talk about year ranges, they mean years. It would be too easy to cheat their system if they went by month also.

they may automatically use aftermarket, however, I know in NY you have the right to demand New OEM parts. If you dont and they repair it with aftermarket and it looks bad, you also have the right to demand they do it over with new OEM parts, no matter how old the car is.

Proof of purchase date is very easy to find/prove. 2 years from that date would makes sense to me, but I realize I don't make insurance policy. A tree limb fell on my car so I will find out soon - hopefully having Nissan do the work will increase my chances of OEM parts.

This is likely true, but you can always negotiate. Keep insisting on new OEM parts, and even if your insurance company has this policy, they may budge.

Amusingly, they wanted to use a used part to fix my car - a broken HID. Surprise surprise, not much luck finding one...

you have the right to request oem parts. auto shops arent losing by doing the deed. a good bodyshop would deal with the appraiser themselves so that you dont get short shafted. they make there money either way. my cars going in this month thanks to ins. i pay enough a month to recieve a complete paint job. lol
