A typical carbon fiber hood weighs around 10-20lbs.

My VIS was 22lbs according to the shipping label. I belive its around 15-20lbs at the most vs around 75lbs for a OEM hood. CF hood will not have paint chips in it like the stock hood would, and on my black Max its barely noticable that its there. When buying a CF hood, make sure its VIS or it WILL suck. I had some CF hood I bought through Custom Maxima and it was total ****, very unsafe to drive, and it would fly off the car if it wasn't for the hood pins. My VIS stays on as sturdy as the OEM hood, fits like OEM hood and is VERY high quality. I've yet to find a paint chip in it and its over a year old now I think.

Does VIS make the trunk also? How much does it weigh versus stock?

If VIS made a CF trunk lid, I would heave it already- so the answer is NO. They only make a OEM style CF hood, and the fuggly looking invader hood which is also CF.

Someone made a CF trunk lid for us 5th gens, might have been Fiber Images, I don't remember, but I was going to get one till I saw the pics. Fitment was just terrible, I saw a VIS trunk hatch for a RSX on a customer's car, its fitment was perfect and everything was predrilled- like for struts, lights, emblems- just like factory ! The OEM rear glass fit in the CF hatch just perfect, but it it was me I woulda put in a lexan glass in the back to save alot of weight.... but I don't own a RSX.

fiber images doesn't make one for us. I am going to call them and ask if they would consider making a hood for us. I would give them my stock hood to use.

Hood pins are a good precaution, but what is the reliability to not have them on the VIS (specific) hood? Have you experienced any bowing at highway speeds with yours? Does it rattle? Do you ever fear the notion that it's going to just fly off when your driving? I'd like to know this for myself and my future purchase. Thanks bbvq.

Everyone I know that has a carbon fiber hood has hood pins I guess, just to feel "safe". My friend actually has hood pins on his car that uses a key to lock it and open it,looks cool. And Im glad that I read this thread before I bought one of those ebay POS carbon fiber hoods. VIS here I come.

Too bad they don't make a 6th gen CF hood, how long did it take for CF to be available for thr 5th gen after it came out?

I drive my Maxima like its intended, I feel like I'm on the autobahn on the way to work and go deep deep into the very end of the speedo sometimes. I have no hood pins, and I don't experience any bowing- like I did with the cheap hood from CM. VIS hoods do not require hood pins, I've had my hood for bout a year now and it hasn't blown off at 150MPH+ speeds as of yet. As a bonus, I have no paint chips at all

can you reuse the hood lift struts with CF hood?

as far as the latch, as long as the loop for the stock latch is solid in the hood, it will not fly open, unless it cracks and breaks off.

i agree with all the VIS praising statements. 6 months and no issues with mine, fits great, no hood pins, but i am never worried its gonna fly up.

as far as the trunk, i had/have a CF trunk from Ionic Dynamics. im one of the few. the guys got it to sit properly, no more fitment issues like in the original pics, but they cant open their trunks, as far as i know. im waiting on a replacement trunk from Jose up there, and should get it by the end of the month, i hope, and will work out the fitment so that it sits right AND i can open the trunk. i have an idea of what needs to be done.

VIS fits with no modifications but you MIGHT need to readjust your hood latch in order for it to lock securely.

VIS is predrilled for washer nozzles

VIS hood has no provissions for hood struts- nor does any other hood I seen.

I have not had any issues with this or my previous NON-VIS hood durring winter.

Do NOT use hood struts with CF hoods, the struts are WAY to strong for this light hood and will crack the hood in half if you try to shut it down- going against the hood strut force WILL crack any CF hood.

OEM hood is about 60-80lbs, I am not 100% sure but it requires 2 people to handle it as its so big and its still kinda heavy. VIS hood is VERY light- I think its bout 20lbs.

You can most likely shead 50lbs off the front of the car with a CF hood.

Question here.

What if you get alot of rain or snow on the carbon fiber hood will it damage it in the long run or do you have to buy a car cover to protect it every once in while?

I can't hide my Max in a garage.

3. I remember hearing something about CF hoods and having it on during winter not being good for it? Anyone know anything about that?

As lot of org member knows that Im one of first to buy VIS Invader CF hood, I had it for lil over 2 yrs or 2yrs.
1. Yes, I had to lift up my factory setting latch.

2. Yes, it does come pre-cut holes for the washer nozzles but ur factory nozzles are not gonna fit, I had to get the ricer white light after market nozzles.

3. Yes, I do hav problems after the massive weather change. My CF hood is now light green in color some pple think that I got it custom, and it started to crack on the clear coat, one of the most common problems wit these CF hood cuz I know at leat 3 others wit the same issues.

My advise to whom ever is thinking about getting CF hood is to tell them not to get it unless they're in CA or anywhere they don't hav to go through massive weather changes. Right now I wanna put factory hood so bad that I'll giv my hood away.

dam woo choo, u just scared 40% of the market interest in a CF hood out of buying one. Hopefully when i can afford one, they'll have some special protectant that will hold even with bad weather?

great feedback btw.

To my experience even the best hoods on the market eventually get dull or change color (even in california). To cure this problem you need to wet sand and re clear coat the hood to keep it looking new which can be a hassle. IMHO id never buy a cf hood again.

That about says it all. I'll never do a CF hood on a daily driver again.
