well given the above, i didnt assume. you said you wanted to do it as cheaply as possible.

I think peoples pride gets hurt when someone suggests they buy a cheaper car. It's human nature I guess. We do however have the ability to better ourselves and our cash flow. The sky is the limit! The only question is: How high do you want to go?

I'm not sure if this is any consolation, but Bill Gates used to drive around in a '84 Honda Accord even though he had billions. Another little fact. 5 years ago the Washington Post did a write up on which was the most popular car millionaires drive. It was a Ford Taurus. Most of those millionaires were also mechanics.

They only mentioned auto mechanics and they didn't give the average. Millionaire coule mean exactly one million. One of the reasons they cited was most of these people were very conservative money spenders. My father showed me the article and I about ****.

 

makes sense... im a dealer tech and a conservative spender.

the really good techs clear $100K/yr. put it into good assets and a career of it (20-30yrs) makes sense.

millionaire also includes assets, like houses and stuff... so i guess its easy to see...

 

4drGTI, I was wondering if you had any Shell stations near you? If so, they offer 5% cash back on gasoline purchases. This can save you alot of money. Based on $3 a gallon that would save you 15 cents a gallon. That would only put you back 5 cents a gallon over what you would normally pay before this gas hike.

i usually use 89 octane(premium)...dont wanna go to low with the 87 or pay too much for hte 91+...but yeah...gas prices in chicago are $3 for unleaded...dayamm bush

 

Read your manual. I think the factory recommends a certain type of fuel grade and thats what your should try to abide by

 

you are killing your gas milage and as prices of gas go higher, the % difference in cost between grades becomes less. I think you are doing it the expensive way

Yeah, alot of places in rural areas have nothing but regular gas so Nissan puts that disclaimer in.

Go to a Grand National or Supra forum, and do a search on home brew race gas. Many turbo owners do not like to pay ~$4 per gallon for 104 octane which is similar to your situation, just on a different level.

They mix something like 91 octane, toluene (or xylene), and marvel mystery oil to increase the octane. I forget how much of each.

If you get the calculations, you should be able to use 87 octane and raise it to 91 octane for much cheaper than the $0.20 premium to run 91.

So.... get the formula, plug in the costs, identify the cheapest route to 91 pisswater gas nirvana, and report your findings so the mods could make it a sticky and possibly end the fuel threads once and for all.

 

sounds good, but in reality...

toulene and alcohols run optimally at higher (richer) a/f ratios, those guys running homebrews are concerned about antiknock index and NOTHING else, including gas mileage.

similar to saying, 'if you had a f350 superduty diesel 6.0L, you wouldnt have to push the pedal as hard, so youd get better mileage.'
