OT, but my parents' new 750Li has suddenly shutdown completely a couple of times while driving. Is this a common problem?

If you are being serious.. No this isnt a common problem. I havent seen anything of this. I would get it into the the dealer. I would bet its just a programming issue.

We havent seen many problems at all with the 750, since the 745 was the car that BMW had to work out all the bugs

Well, I can tell you if they beg enough... or be upset, you probably could have them come pick up that car. Thats a big part of my job is going and pickin up problem cars from the customers house/work. I got to pick up and deliver a 645 CiC thats on 20s. Very fun car to drive and looks sick too

This is not a gas cap issue. There is a purge or control valve near the gas tank that takes the fuems from the gas tank and send them back to the exhaust to burn them and not polute the air. Your valve is not working and is leaking the fuems out into the air. The part is like $20 from the dealership, but the labor is another $80. The dealership told me that the only problem this will cause is the CEL will stay on. I have cleared my code 4 times and it still comes on. Getting it replaced next week.

Actually, I have seen the gross evap leak code happen because of a loose gas cap on my Maxima before. I thought it was weird to get that code just for the gas cap, but tightening the cap solved the problem. The first time, I let the light go away on its own (took a week). The second time, I tightened the cap and reset the code myself.

That's ...in Cali all the gas stations have pumps where you pay before you pump. Its a more efficient way of keeping people from stealing gas.

I don't know for sure if it is to prevent people from stealing gas.
