Catback exhaust frees up airflow much better than the cat. Stock cat is not as restrictive so you’ll probably not even feel the difference.

I would leave them alone till they rot off...

Neither will give you much in the power department.

If I’m not mistaken headers are like $800 a bit more than a catback, but you’ll definitely get what you pay for. If you don’t feel like spending that much just get the air intake. Combined with your y-pipe you will also see a significant improvement.

an aftermarket cat will do virtually NOTHING for you unless you're FI or Nitrous

PS, I have a Frankencar/K&N intake for sale for almost 1/2 of what it would cost new...so if you're interested in some cheap power, let me know!!! (pm me)

I'd go with the catback, unless the only exhaust choice you have is a fart can or the crush bend exhaust.

If choosing one or the other...

If I had to choose, I would get a cat-back system. It will allow more of that free flowing air from your y-pipe to exist the exhaust system faster. If you get a hi-flo cat, your free flowing y-pipe into the cat will just get bottlenecked at the catback (on my maxima I noticed the crushed bends on the OEM cat-back exhaust narrow piping = air restricted) as well as the fact that my new cat-back has .5" wider piping from the cat all the way to the new straight-through muffler. I was told by someone who sells hi flo-cats that they will not offer much additional HP (he stood to gain money from me and recommended I wait) - he told me that unless the cat is clogged, not to force/rush a new cat and just replace it when the OEM cat is dying/clogged. With that said, a nice cat-back system is a lot more $ than just a hi-flo cat but then again you are paying for a lot of piping, a new silencer/muffler, etc. The cat-back addresses a larger section of the exhaust system than just a cat (which isn't that restrictive) which is why I say that with a y-pipe and a new-cat you will still hit a bottle-neck at the cat-back which is a good part of the rear exhaust system. I like my Greddy EVO2 cat-back ($489 for it).

You really wont see that much power w/ a catback. The Y pipe gains gave you the biggest bang for the buck already.
