man, this stupid light goes on when you have between 2-4 gallons left. in my car when the light comes on, and i do a fill up, its around 3 gallons short of 18.5 gal tank capacity.
i would say you have between 40-74 miles left when the light comes on till you are completely dry.

mine comes on pretty consistently between 30-40 miles listed on the 'dte'. it seems like it is based off how much is left in your tank AND its calculated MPG. if it comes on, id say you really shouldnt push it beyond 20 miles.

That computer is very inaccurate, and you shouldn't even pay any attention to it, as it is there for reference, not to live by.
It will change (distance to empty) according the way you drive.
More specifically, if you're coasting down a hill @ 60mph, it may read 30-40, and if you go WOT through 2nd, it might read much lower because it's based on calculations related to MPG, which is also a very inaccurate reading on the trip computer.
I've noticed on both my 95 and 03, (same size tank) that the light typically goes on @~ 2-2.5 gallons left in tank (16.5+ to fill up)

It is possible to burn out the gas light. It is just a bulb in most cases and the bulb will eventually die. I went through three in my '90 Nissan pick-up and I know for a fact I went over 65miles w/ the light on in that thing on more than one occasion and never ran out. Generally I wouldn't recommend this, but I never had a problem w/ that truck in 240,000 so... I did close to forty miles at 80-85 on hilly highways in CT and only put 16.1 gallons in so it all depends. Each car is also different.
It all depends on driving style and were you live ie, are there hills etc...

FUEL WARNING LAMP OPERATION CHECK
Turn ignition switch "OFF".
Disconnect fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector B19.
Connect a resistor (80 Ohms ) between fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector terminals 2 and 5.
Turn ignition switch "ON". The fuel warning lamp should come on.
NOTE: ECM might store the 1st trip DTC P0180 and the 1st trip DTC P0464 during this inspection.
If the DTC is stored in ECM memory, erase the DTC after reconnecting fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector.

The bulb is a 74 I think. There is 2 screws in the plastic plate holding in the cluster. And 3 in the cluster itself. Find the spot where the blub is twist it out and replace...Be care when u take out the bulb it is wedged in there preety good. Also don't take out the plastic part when its hot out because it breaks easy.

When the light comes on you have 3.5 Gallons left. Dont believe the DTE flashing light. Always look at the yellow light that comes on and calculate about 20 miles a gallon. I wouldnt go over 50 miles ONCE the light turns on.
Its 3.5 gallons for sure, since it comes on when we used up 15 gallons and the whole tank is 18.5
