Replacing belts (is it necessary)

I went in for an inspection and what came out of it was to replace the belts and was quoted $160.

I have heard GoodYear belts are the best, should I go in for replacing with non-OEM belts.

On that very note has anyone changed their belts on their own, if yes, can a writeup be posted.

I bought mines OEM, call DaveB 1-888-254-6060. As for the write up.... Google it, I try to find it for you but I couldn't. As far as replacing the Big one...alternator one... it is the easiest one.. the power steering one is the bad boy.

And yes, belt replacement is a necessary maintenance item. If the belts look frayed or cracking, swap them out asap. If they look decent but have higher mileage since the last change, better to be safe than sorry, so swap them out. It can't hurt.

Also any major name brand of belt - gates or goodyear , should be good enough if the OEM's are ridiculously priced.

Just my 2¢

Thank you all.

I shall go with GoodYear since they have been in this rubber business of decades. OEM belts are not pricey at all, but then Nissan is not in this business of belts and should be getting it from somewhere... I might just go ahead and get it from a reputable company. $160 that was quoted is quite resonable and the shop is one I totally trust (AAA certified).

I knew the job was going to be tough and when an experienced forumer like you re-enforced my premise -- then I don't even want to go there . Get it done by someone who has all the special tools to access the hard to reach bolts.

LOL Re-enforce a premise? WTF! Do you mean reinforce a conclusion?

As to the belts, how DYI is this job?

i changed them last weekend, after 80K. The power steering one is a royal PITA. You should change them before they snap...

If this link doesn't work just check the stickys - Installation and How-to's. Search for belt.

I'll be doing this soon too and plan to do it myself.
