Blown TCU

So I blew my Automatic Transmission Controller the other day, CEL came on, car wont got out of first and will only go into reverse when it feels like it, need to get it replaced and was wondering how much it's going to set me back and how serious this is. Am I going to need to get a new tranny as well or am I good just with the new controller?

what code did you pull for the tcm failure? i am inquiring to make sure that is the root and not something like a neutral safety switch. that would prohibit you from changing gears unless you start the car in neutral. i had one go bad on my old 95 altima auto and it also set the cel off.

can't really start the car in "neutral" because it's an automatic, i forgot which code it was but it was the one. I'm pretty sure that it's the root but i'm not positive which specific code it was.

^^^Are you sure ??? I think it will cut off in whatever gear you want, but you can only remove the key while it is in park. You should be able to put the key in, turn it one position, and put your foot on the brake, and take it out of gear. You should play around with things like this just to learn what your car will and won't do.
