i've just passed 30k miles and i'm planning on taking my max in for the standard maintenance. but someone told me that they don't even do anything, just checking for timing belts being off and flushing the coolant and oil change. the fluids i can do separately for far less than the $320 i was quoted at the dealer.
if my car is running fine with regular oil changes and i have an auto tranny, is it really worth it to take it in?

A 30k, etc. service is just a way to make a lot of money for doing nothing. You need to get a good independent mechanic, walk into the shop with Nissan parts in hand and specify exact items you want done and how. The term "30k service" is vague and can mean ten different things to ten different people. Be specific and pay only for actual items replaced, fluids flushed (yes, flushed, not just drained and filled). You need to be very proactive and knowledgeable about this, otherwise you end up paying a lot for very little work. The transmission should be flushed at a transmission shop, and the cooling system at a radiator shop.

I always get maintenance.

I get all my maintenance at the dealer even oil changes only because its the same price as doing it my self. I even got the 30K service but it did not cost 300+ it was more like $145.
