2k2 Clutch

Well I was at work today and this 2k2 max 6 speed comes in with a tranny problem. Well It ended up being the clutch but the thing that surprised me was that this car was a 2k2 and only had 18k on it. The driver is a young lady and the car is in mint condition. Doenst look like it is ever abused or anything like that. Well the car was still under warranty but the nissan warranty only covers the clutch disc and nothing else. It got me thinking in what condition my clutch is in and maybe it is time to upgrade. I currently have 48.5 on my engine and tranny.

I'm changing mine next Tuesday. My car just rolled over 90k. It still drives fine on the street but was slipping last time I was at the track. Power upgrades plus the new drag radials must be too much for it.

Fidanza aluminum flywheel and Clutchmasters stage 3 just came in and are waiting for my next day off.

Her clutch was probobly just a fluke or she is a really poor driver.

Betcha she doesn't use the dead pedal. All it takes is riding the clutch pedal with just a tiny fraction of force and the disk will eventually go.

BINGO. She probably leaves her foot on the clutch all the time. 18,000 miles and a new clutch .When i was looking for a replacement car this year i found a 2003 6sp only option moonroof with only 14,000 miles on it. car sold very quickly and i wasn't able to get it....

Dude thats nuts not using the dead pedal. My leg would be damn tired if i left my foot on the clutch while driving around all the time. I'm gonna go with the guess that she just doesnt know how to drive.

because if theres a vibration upon engagement due to hotspots or runout on the flywheel or pressure plate, they should be covered too. furthermore, you wont see me putting a disc in by itself. if its worn out, it probably was from her riding the clutch, and i would be getting a p/p coming while the flywheel is sublet to the machine shop. it would kinda suck to put a disc in and then have it comeback a week later for a vibration during clutch engagement, huh.

are you working on this car, or another tech?

how long you been a tech for?

every make ive worked for has covered p/p and flywheel for runout.

If I remember correctly there was a TSB for early 2k2s for a clutch chatter issue. Nissan actually changed the disk they were using midway through the model year.

Does u guys rev match, heel-toe downshift? I hear this improves the life of the clutch & transmission....

are there really people who DON'T rev-match ALL THE TIME? i've been in cars with people who weren't necessarily great at driving stick... but even they at least TRIED to rev-match every single shift.

heel-toe shifting isn't really necessary, it just allows you to get back on the gas faster while downshifting.

and as far as the original question, i'll agree with everyone else about her riding the clutch. one of my friends had to have a clutch replaced after like 15,000 miles because she used to do the same thing... the first time i rode in her car i mentioned it, and she doesn't do it anymore.

i dont think tapping gas before letting out the clutch does anything. tahts what the synchros are for. it wears out much more when you have it partially disengaged and giving gas. the gear is half connected and the clutch is half connected.

well wouldn't your synchros wear out alot quicker...which can lead to other premature failures to the transmission? I mean i realize modern cars use synchros...but don't tell me it doesn't do anything when u rev match...so if you want to downshift into 2nd going 50mph, u don't think rev matching will help save the life of the clutch/tranny in this case?

it saves the disc, a little bit.

its best for not inducing an understeer around a heavy corner, but i heel and toe in normal driving... just because.

I have never ever seen anyone rev match. and everybody i know owns a stick. maybe it just never caught on in my area - haha.

on a similar note, my 2k2 clutch is extremely high. is that the standard? i havent driven any other max's. is there any problems with adjusting the pedal? i just dont know if i want all that play in the pedal.

yes the 2k2 clutch is pretty stiff and pretty high compared to other oem clutches....especially hondas with their REAL soft clutches
