"Reflashing" the computer?

Hey guys - i checked the service engine light sticky and couldn't find exactly what i was looking for so looking for some help. The service engine light came on the other day, brought it to autozone, the guy there didn't give me the code but said it was a clogged cat converter. I had just had a new muffler put on and emmissions passed. Brought it to my trusty shop and they said it was just that the computer had to be "reflashed" and it was being set off by the cat converter. The light is off now and they said if it comes back on I'll need to bring to a Nissan to have it reset. Anything to be concerned about here, except for the potential hit to the wallet to have the computer reset? Thanks for your help.

Reflashing it and resetting it are different. Resetting it is something you can do yourself if you want to. Reflashing the computer is not a DIY procedure.

spiromax is correct....for 2k1 maximas just unplug the battery overnight in order to reset the ecu...and to reflash the ecu, it must be brought to the dealership so they can upload a new program via obdii port

As stated above it sounds like autozone simply reset (Cleared) the code -- there is a TSB out for this issue, search stickies. Probably a P0420.
When the code comes back on, don't erase it.
