OD not engaging properly

My OD(Overdrive) is not working as it is supposed to. When I have to make a sudden fast change of lanes and press the accelerator the OD wont engage as fast as it is supposed to. IT IS NOT THE TRANNY. Anything that I should look at. I know that when I was installing the AE pedals I pulled the throtle cable in order to put the pedals on. Any suggestions. Should I adjust the cable for the throtle?

Thanks

So are you saying it's lagging in order to up shift(OD on), or downshift(OD off)?

My '03 (different, I know) acted weird like that a while back. When I was crusing, I'd barely hit the gas and the thing would downshift. It also had NO power to speak of. Turns out the A/F was screwed and I had a bad cat. Try resetting your ECU.

It is always OFF, but the sucker doesn't downshift fast enough....

So if it's always off, then you're always in "3rd" So you want it to get down to second fast, and well, what are your speeds when you want it in 2nd, because maybe it the TCM isn't allowing it to get down to, what it believes are 'safe' speeds for that RPM/MPH relation.

My 95 lags awful when I floor it, then change my mind, then decide i want to floor it (yeas change my mind again).

But my 03 doesn't... maybe apples to oranges

No no... my mistake.. it is off because the light is not on. It is on....... but when I need to floor it... it is like the OD won't engage. What can be wrong?

OD = Over-Drive

Overdrive is the top gear used for crusing. It locks the gear in so that there is no slippage like there is with every other gear. I think what you're saying is that it's not downshifting right. What speed are you going when you floor it? Makes a difference depending on what the gear ratio is. I know in my '03, fooring it at 40, 80, or 120 makes it feel a little slow due to the power band the car is in at that speed.

Well the problem is when I floor it when trying to pass another car. If it is called OD or not well my mistake. Let's say when you floor it at 60 mph the car respond really good but when you do the same at 35 it take time to really engage and do the same as when I do it at 60

Simply put, the car doesn't know which gear to drop it in. 35 cuts close between 1st and 2nd. It seems to be the issue with a number of speeds that cut close between two gears. It is very annoying, I know.

It's normal. Just like NYPD dude said, has to do with gearing.

Hit it right on the spot. The ECU and TCM communicate with each other and when you are on the borderline it ussually plays it safe. Remember that there is really no advantage to going into a gear for a half a second and then the trans having to upshift. Not only is it undue stress but it may actually be slower. OEMs spend ALOT of time calibrating such situations. If you wanna test to see if there is a problem go at 65-70 and floor it it should go into 3rd and give you a pretty good pickup. For first gear trial do it at 10-15, for second 25-30, and for third go at 60 or so.

BTW, keep in mind that transmissions are mainly geared to top out second at 62MPH so anywhere within 7MPH of that and the ECU/TCM is gonna argue

you were good up until here

i think youre thinking of a lock up torque converter. if youre accelerating, theres slippage in every gear in the tq converter. aside from the converter, all gears are 'locked' once the clutch/band engages fully. during light cruise at speeds above 40ish is when the converter goes into lockup. RPM drops a bit and kinda feels like a shift. but its not
