foglight options

I'm looking to buy some aftermarket fog light bulbs but I'm cautious about buying PIAAs because of all the stories of them burning out after a few months. My question is what are my other options? I'm looking for something in hyper white with maybe a tint of blue to match my headlight bulbs. I know silverstar makes bulbs, how are those? Any other companies?

i have extreme whites piaa for both headlights and fog lights, i'm very pleased with those, they give extremely bright and extremely white lights. i actually got pulled over the other day becuase a cop though i was driving around with my high beams on. he was very impressed with the bulbs. i also had silver stars, they are not a bad exchange from stock ones. not very expensive, except the silver stars h3 bulbs burned out for me like every 2 month. and they do give off a little bit of bluish color at night.

i had silverstars, bought them through individual packages and i guess that's the reason why they didn't match. one looks VERY much like stock and the other looked greenish. my experience would say stay away from silverstars, esp at 19 bucks each.

i hear MTEC's are exactly like piaa's output and color for cheaper.

my favorite is stock, they've been working ever since!

alright, what's so bad about the PIAAs? i've had them for ~ 1 year now, and both my foglights are cracked (one even has a hole ~1cm in diameter)....i use them no matter the weather conditions, so i'm sure some water has leaked into there a time or to, yet they still havent burned out, and still match the headlights extremely well....and if they do burn out within a year, just send them in to be replaced under warranty....if they last longer than that, i would think you got your money's worth...that just my opinion though... www.optauto.com is the best place to buy them if you changed your mind...least expensive and they have excellent customer service...

my PIAA super plasmas:

I've bought PIAA Xtreme white plus H3 bulbs and had a look under the bumper this afternoon to install. It looked like the plastic housing was molded into the bumper assembly and I thought the fog lamp housing was held in place by two 10mm nuts. Removed the nuts but wasn't able to remove the lamp assembly "easily".

Since I don't want to break anything, I thought I'd ask if I'm on the right track and maybe I just didn't whack the thing hard enough. Any comments on how to get the units out to install the new bulbs? (2003 Maxima SE)

it sounded like you were on the right path...you have to push from the back, and it will probably take a bit of force, because they may get stuck to the mounting bracket...good luck! (and thanks for finding a relavent post to put this in rather than spamming to get to 15!!)

The super plasma match the hids, the extreme white do not. After the effort to install them with a buddy of mine, I was expecting to see a near match. Not even close. The first words out of my mouth were, "why are they yellow?" My friend started laughing. Get the super plasma to match the hids.

but my HIDS have colorshifting so much that it looks blue from 20ft away... so i don't think the super plasma would work for me. i think piaa spark blues would match me better.

i haven't seen many maxima's with colorshifts like mine, so chances are you'll match with super plasmas

I dont have HIDS though. the problem is I bought my car used and the headlight bulbs were already aftermarket, so I have no idea what kind they are. the output is white but kinda blueish. I'll try to get some pics up. I was looking for some fogs to match that. Would super plasmas be the best choice?

Maybe you outta take the headlight bulbs out and see what kind they are. I would suggest a few things though. If you wanna get a pretty good HID "match" the Super Plasma GT-X do a pretty good job. optauto.com is the cheapest place to get them. I used LTBmotorsports, which is $5 more expensive, but they have awsome customer service. I had to send back a blown bulb and it was not a problem with them at all. And to my last piece of advice. Get your foglight lenses protected. One of mine cracked and got water into it. Thats why the bulb blew. So, once I replaced the lens with a new one, I order some protective film from Lamin-x.com to cover the headlights and foglights. I would highly suggest this stuff. It comes in 5 different colors and 2 layers of thickness. The film (~$20 shipped) paid for itself for what I paid to replace the fog light lense (~$90shipped). Anyhow, good luck with your ride.

if i were you, i would go ahead and order some for your headlights as well so that it's a good match, and they hopefully have around the same life span...

Try Nokya's, there extremely bright and seem like they would match HID's really well. I have them in my headlights right now and i just ordered matching foglight bulbs. They also dont break the bank like PIAA's do. Just for FYI i had PIAA's first and they burnt out in about a year, so it was time to try something new and i love the Nokya's.
