Installed Fidanza flywheel and...

I'm getting a strange vibration at idle and low RPMs.
I've had the flywheel in for about 500 miles and it hasn't gone away. If I hold the RPMs at about 1000 it shakes the whole car. I know there are tradeoffs when going with performance parts but I think this could lead to damage.
I'm thinking it may be out of balance or possibly got damaged in shipping. When I received the flywheel the dowels were mushroomed like they had been hammered on. I think it happened in shipping. They sent me more dowels and they went in easily.

I'm planning on taking it out on my next day off and installing the stock part to see if that fixes it. If it does I'll know it's the flywheel and not the new clutch/pressure plate. I suspect the flywheel because of the damage when I received it. I was very careful not to overtorque anything and used the correct pattern.

Does anyone have any other ideas or things I should check first?

I like the flywheel. The car feels faster even though I've been taking it easy while braking in the new clutch. I just need to figure out what's causing the vibration.

I get some unusual loud noise as well when I'm taking off and when I'm switching gears. I've noticed noise occurs at certain RPM though

i get a lil vibration, mine didnt fit to well , the hole in the middle was a real tight fit, then two of my bolts got cross threaded or soemthing liek that, so they had to be jb welded in. sadly the bolts are right next to eaxt other so im affreid of taking it off ever agian,i thinkl all the holes would have to be redrilled and tapped as well and rebalanced.

acyually the dealer did it. long story but the bolts werent gripping perfectly so they added some jb weld into the hole to seal the bolt into the hole better. besides a lil vibration everything seems fine. it does scare me knowing that liquid metal is holding my car together tho

Ive installed fidanza's on 3 maxima's and a 240sx, and never had a vibration problem with them. The fit is really tight on the maxima, are you sure you seated the flywheel all the way before torquing the bolts down?

Damn you got one stupid dealer. But the fidanza threads can strip. When I was doing an engine swap, the guys before me very slightly stripped the threads. Two of them.

But instead of booty jacking the fix with JB weld, I found some longer bolts that engaged the threads the original short bolts didn't touch. I was able to get the proper torque with no problem.

JB weld = And those who use it for such a purpose.

Yeah, it fit snug but not overly tight. I also tightened each bolt in a cross pattern about 5 or 6 times before finally torquing them to spec. I did the same when tightening the pressure plate bolts.

Is it realistic to think it could have been damaged in shipping? It seems like it would take a lot of force to mushroom all 3 dowels. I know it wouldn't have left Fidanza like that.

Have you had any experience with their customer service?

I should be able to take it out Tuesday and find out if putting the stock flywheel back in helps.

If the steel dowels were smashed like a used bullet, yeah, that might be enough force to warp the aluminum flywheel.

LOL....

and i bet the threads were stripped, and they either offered to replace the crankshaft, or JB weld the bolts.

if my engine comes out for something as stupid as stripped bolts, its getting some g'damn internals

and what SR20 said... helicoil is your friend.

and so is his cousin time-sert.

fidenza does recommend that you balance your flywheel before installation even though it is a CNC'ed piece to close tolerances

I just spoke with Wayne at Fidanza. He said there should be no vibration. He said the flywheels are balanced but sometimes the aftermarket clutches are not properly balanced.

I found a shop that will balance both pieces for me while I wait. I'm planning on pulling them out Tuesday, balancing them, and reinstalling them. That should take care of the vibration and let me know which piece was out of balance.
