Scary Prollem, Pedal hit the Floor!

Hey,

I was wondering if anybody else had faced this....

I had driven my 2001 out to the local track, round 45 min trip and it sat in the parking lot for around 3 hours. (didn't run the car) I get back in the car and my brakes are only half working. I drive the car home because it still stops, but when i hit the brakes, it started stopping, then kep the same rate of decelleration while it sucked the brake pedal to the floorboard. Plus, no antilock action as the car wouldn't stop fast enough to activate. The problem got worse the longer i was driving the car.

SO. I got the car home using the tranny and the e-brake to stop on the way. Upon arriving in the neighborhood (where i was confident i could get home) i started romping on the brakes. I finally got the antilocks to kick in, and Immediately (after like 8 runs) my brakes were back to normal. This hasn't happened since. The incident was two weeks ago too. Any thoughts?

I mean what do i tell the dealer, they are *** holes and won't even believe the car pulls to the right.... car has 52,000 on it. Something tels me that would be futile....

Just bought the car from the dealer @ 49,000mi

Can i get them to do this for me under their 3,000 mi used car warranty...?

Its a thought, but i can't afford to pay for it right now.

Its at the dealer now for allignment, should i ask that they do this?
(only 200mi left of warranty)

Oh, by the way, killer deal, the car is already dropped on eibachs, with i THINK toxico struts, and motegi rims....with some angel eyes...mmmm looks great, I'll post pics soon!

It was a show off car for the dealer's DAUGHTER.....da da dummm =)

I doubt they will [attempt] to fix it unless they can repeat the symptom.

Sounds like a nice car you've got there.

TXT: fair nuff....but i am a maxima coneseur, this car is CLEAN, and well kept, the girl had light feet. My last car was a 5 spd 97, quick as hell. (ws y-pipe, stb, and pirellis) the fact that there is no y-pipe, intake or anything like that on this one is also a giveaway they wanted looks, not speed. Besides, they spendt like $2k on parts and didn't even drop the $200 for a y-pipe and $69 for a stb....Warpspeed y, and stb on the way for this one....poor girl didn't get a chance to do the cheap stuff =)

And yes, that is the crappy part about the dealer, i halfway wanted the prollem to stick, so I could prove it happened....but it fixed itself, DAM smart maxima....

=)

Make sure you don't have a stuck caliper happened to me alittle over a week ago and I was driving, went to stop and mush pedal, had to pump pedal to get it to stop. Continued driving and didn't act as bad at under 40mph but take it to 70mph and pedal mushed and no stopping hardly at all. Stuck drivers side front caliper causing brakes to overheat boiling brake fluid. Just a thought maybe yours too.

Ah heyull...

Yeah, um, wow, what can I say, good call on the gunn nissan....um uhhhh.... yeah, wish I'd posted sooner (darn 15 rule.) =(

Ok, so..... what we're looking at is for the brake lines to be flushed. I'm thinking, undoing the bleeder on a rear brake, and pumping the brake (at 50% of course per the brake bleeding thread) to squeeze as much fluid out as i can, adding new fluid, then bleeding brakes?

well good luck on that at gunn....they've charged us an arm and a leg for regular maintenence for such a long time! I was so thankful when i found San Marcos Nissan, because they know how to treat a customer, and they actually know about the cars they're dealing with, which i can certainly say GUNN does not....if you ever get your car outta there alive, don't ever bring it back....my advice...

Yes my intention was not to give it to them at all for the brake flush, hence the summary of procedure on my previous post. I have to agree with you, gunn nissan is full of idiots.

In other words, can i flush them myself by doing those things, anybody done this before?

yes, you can bleed/flush them yourself. you should have done that BEFORE the track day.

always, always, always bleed your brakes thoroughly before hitting a track.

anyway, fluid heated up, expanded, pushed fluid out and formed a bubble, you couldnt stop for a while, eventually the bubble worked its way out, now you have brakes again.

if you have the warranty, tell them the brake fluid is saturated, and youre pissed they didnt check it when they did the UCI...

i believe he said he went to the track. he didn't ride it. it's like me going to nascar. doesn't mean i actually raced the car, i just went to nascar.

read the top. he went to the track (45 minute trip), parked for 3 hours, and then the problems occurred on the drive back.

What would possess you to go to the stealership for a wheel alignment, unless you are getting it for nothing?

Wheel alignments are not their area of expertise and if they do them it would be at considerably higher cost than a tire/wheel alignment shop.

every dealer ive worked at does a 4w align for $69 or less. dealer techs know the car better than a chain shop (tires plus, etc.)...

you might be better off with an alignment-only shop as far as price or expertise.

Hey, sorry, neglected the post for a bit. Yeah, the alignment was free, it was on the WE OWE from the dealer from when i bought the car. Still pulls slightly to the right but not as bad, I will prolly have to take it to a specialist to get looked at. I like the bubble theory most of all. I figure the vibration of the ABS system helped work the bubble out. I will bleed the brakes next chance I get. Pics coming soon! So is warpspeed y, and FTSB. Considering a RSB also just to finish the car off. THEN i can hit the tracks =) both autocross and drag. Thanks for the help on this one guys!

no problem

just an FYI, an alignment cant straighten out a drift or pull on a maxima due to frozen caster.
