Vacuum sounding when starting car

So I turned on the car and it's sounds like a vacuum turning on for like a second.. I'm not liking it at all but I got a feeling it has to do with the cold weather... it sounds like it's right at the engine bay or around the MAF area... I'm planning to get a new MAF here soon anways so hopefully some of my other problems can be solved but another one pops up like always... any help to what the problem could be would be helpful.. Thanks!!!

it could be the fuel pump clicking on. turn the key to start(but do not start it) and see if you hear the same noise

If you have a CAI then its the CAI. Mine makes that noise too (I guess its because I put the intake bypass). Ive noticed that the intake bypass makes the CAI work as a short ram at low rpm. You only get the growl when you reach mid to higher rpm. Is it just me or is it because my car is an automatic?

I sorta have the same sound when mines cold too. I start it, the RPMS go up to like 2-3k, then they dip back down a little bit, and when it does that it makes this little....well....farting sound is the only way i know of to describe it. It only last for maybe....1 second at the very most. I don't know what it is. Checked my codes and am gettin a 0021 which is IVT....no CEL light yet, but the code is there. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I was wondering if the sound came from the engine or the MAF/Intake area... it sounds like it's at the MAF/Intake area but who knows.. im gonna try to replace the MAF soon here since I got a new one butwho knows... i got a feeling the sound is from the engine...

I dunno for sure, will have to check tomorrow morning. Any ideas bout the 0021 code?? IVT I have no idea what that is, or if it would have anything to do with the noise but anyways...

Also, do you have to interpret the code or anything that you get when you do the ghetto check code method? The turnin the key and hittin the pedal. Like where the CEL light will flash fast, 10 times, then slow 10 times, then twice, then once?

ghetto check code method? yes thats an 0021

zero, probably just the intake. is it a sucking noise or a whirring noise or what? does it have a whistle to it?

Yeah, I am getting the same problem with my car (00 max 5 spd), sometimes even after it has warmed up completely. I used to think it was the cold, but it used to do it once in a while in the summer as well, even after I took off the CAI. I think a whirring noise that lasts about a second or more is a pretty accurate description. The noise has me and my mechanic totally puzzled. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

no, its not a whirring noise, its more like a.......farting noise. When i start, it revs up to around 2,000 rpms. Then it makes the noise when it drops back down to little bit over 1,100 rpms.

Oh yeah... i know the intake makes noise... but it's a different noise... i can hear the intake hissin' when it starts but this noise is obvious and sounds like a vacuum turning off... i think everyone on here are hearing different spots under the hood therefore hearing different noises... too bad i can't get a voice recorder and let u guys hear it.. haha... but yeah hopefully this weekend i'll mess around with the car and see what goes...

does your car have a cranking problem, I mean does it start on the initial key turn? I had a sucking sound just recently, but my problem was my battery's CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) was tested at 130CCA a new battery is like 650CCA. The problem (sound) would happen when I would try to start the car but it would take 3 or 4 cranks of the key to get it started, but on the first crank it would make this "whoomp" sound, like a vacuum sucking. Replaced the battery and no sound. Just a thought.

Mine ('00 - GLE) does this as well. It only started after I hyper-grounded my car and only when the weather turns cold.

It has been doing this now for 2 years. It's got me puzzled but I've quit worrying about it.

She has no problem cranking at all.. it only has the horrible sound (near driver side) but i'm pretty sure it's not the intake... but I'm going to do more research this weekend to find out what the deal is!
