How do you figure out which coil is bad?

I have used the scanner to find out that I have a coil pack that is bad. What is the easiest way to figure out which coil is bad? I know you should just replace all of them but I am in the process of buying another car and do not have the $360 to drop on all six of them. I know that if it is bad enough a code will flash letting you know which one but in the 3 times I have scanned it nothing has come up other than the coil pack code. Thanks for any hlp you can provide.

testing them can be somewhat confusing. the best way to find the culprit is unplugging them one by one. you will eventually pull one that does not the running condition of the motor and thats the one. this is of course when stalling is present and typically is harder to find a random misfire. sometimes pulling the code will show the exact code and other times it gives the general misfire code.

That would be hard to figure out, generally that it is best to replace all the coils, since it wouldn't make sense if just one coil to replace and let say later on a different coil goes. Just like replacing your brakes or tires. Yes, coils are not cheap, I know since I had mine on the Mercedes, thank god Mercedes only uses three total, but Maxima has six individual one, which is costly.

If youve got a present misfire at idle, unplug them and replug them one by one. the one that doesnt cause the engine to stumble is the failed coil.

that is, if you only have one

I had the same issue and when I was pulling them out to do the test described above, I noticed one spark plug was much darker than the rest and I figured that would be the coil culprit so I just bought one at the Nissan dealership and bingo, the light went away and here I am 9 months later with no light. No need to replace the others if you can single one out...don't listen to other people on here...don't fix something if it's not broken.

When I diagnosed mine, I pulled a secondary code for Cylinder 2 misfiring (forgot what it was) - I just assumed they were related and that the coil on #2 was the bad one.

They are going to fail sooner or later....... so I rather save a few bucks and replace them altogether.......my .02

Hi gang, I'm new to the site and glad to have found you! I have the infamous coil issues as well. Two questions - Do you have any recomendations as to which inexpensive OBDll scanner to buy? Also - I've seen reference on other sites that Nissan has a new or updated coil (different part number or markings than the originals?). Does anyone have any info on that? Thanks in advance !
