Auto Cross Questions

i've been thinking about this a lot recently...what is required? i thought it was just like drag racing where you go, sign your life away and just do it...the only difference i thought was wearing a helmet
my friend came to me the other day and said that you have to go to the scca school of driving and before you auto-x for your first time, you will end up forking over about $600...i'm saying he is talking out of his @$$ but i'm not sure...so what do you need to do before you can autocross?

He's lying out of his a$$. Absolutely no experience or instruction is required to run in a Solo2 event. All you need is your car and a helmet. And even then, loaner helmets can be obtained without a problem if you don't have one. Just go there, plop down your $25 ($20 if you are a member), and enjoy!

Not sure how it goes with SCCA, but you could always check www.jcna.com to see if they've got something in your area.
Good luck.
Cheers!

driver's license, $20-25 (varies depending on sanctioning club hosting the event), M90 or SA90 or newer helmet, working seatbelts or safety harness, tread on the tires, return spring on the throttle body/wire, all lug nuts for the wheels, and a battery tie-down brace.
shorts can be worn for Solo 2
for your first event, just talk to some of the vets and they'll give you some pointers on tire pressure, course walkthrough, etc etc. After a few events you'll definately be a better drive.
here are pics from my autocross today (I'm not pictured since I can race and take pics at the same time): http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4292572965
