P0505 code, fried ECU
I was driving under normal conditions when I got the scent of burned electronics. I figured it was something outside since the windows were down. Car idle went to nothing short of shutting down, I got it home but the idle just was gone and the stench of electronics was definately in the car. Next morning I took it to Autozone, they pulled a P0505 which in turn is the Idle Air Control Valve. I purchased the valve and when I removed the old one the connector was literally fused to the socket of the valve. I finally broke the socket and discovered the short, upon disassembly of the valve, water somehow got into the stepper motor that operates the "plunger???" anyway I replaced the part and now the idle is at about 1500 when it starts and goes up and down 100 to 200 rpms just sitting. I tried the idle adjustment but no help. Today I decided to remove the ECU prior to taking it to the stealership to take a peak, well one of the components is blown, fried, dead. Funny but car runs just fine, everything works other than the idle. I will be buying an ECU tomorrow and will post the results. Thanks to everyone on this site, the information has helped tremendously in the past.

Thanks for the advice, no mods at all. Car is bone stock, I tried the idle air volume procedure and got no results. When I removed the cover on the ECU it has a few components definately fried, just blown without any warning. Did not have any luck acquiring an ECU today, do you guys really think it may be covered under the 80000 mile warranty? I just dont like when service advisors quote the warranty like they wrote it, and of course you know it turns into a battle just about every time. I will look into it though, thanks again.

Just dug out the warranty manual and you appear to be correct. I am definately under 8 yrs and 80000 miles. Just need to pursue it with "kid" gloves and hopefully no out of pocket expense. Thanks again, they will see my Maxima this weekend or early next week.

Here is an update...........I took the car to the dealer prior to purchasing a used ECU. Well thanks to this forum and especially bewstaddict it was replaced under the 8yr 80000 warranty. It was awesome being the car is at 70000. Word to the wise troubleshoot all you can yourself, educate yourself on the problem, read the online service manual and be prepared to state your case. They tried hard to sell me 2900 dollars worth of repairs and all I needed was an ECU under warranty. Also Alex at Midway Nissan in Phoenix was my service advisor, he was cool about the whole situation. Knock on wood all the bugs are gone.
