Identifying exhaust noise

I recently returned from a trip home to Buffalo. While I was there I started noticing a rattle coming from the exhaust. I could tell because it came from the passenger side rear and only when I was on the accelerator. Then on the return trip I noticed the exhaust made noise, just generally louder and a not so clean sound. Now I'm hearing both symptoms and even when I'm cruising in gear and release the throttle there is another noise, almost sort of a drone.

I did a brief inspection and the exhaust is hanging alright. I still have an extended warranty and I will probably take it in for them to look at it. I was just wondering what might be the problem. Maybe there's a hole somewhere in the exhaust or a hanger or bracket is loose?

Check very carefully to where the cross bar around midway between your tires in the center of your car is. The stock exhaust is bent right there to keep it from hitting, your exhaust moves alot when you put it in gear. Usually if this is where the system is hitting, you should hear a clunk when it hits a bump. However, if it is riding on the crossbar, you should be able to see the skid marks on the pipe itself. This can cause the exhaust to resonate through the entire chassis and present a horrible exhaust drone. Look carefully under your car, the cross bar is after the cat and before the resonator from the front, back. you may need to fix a hanger, or devise a spacer over the cross bar. I wire tied in a braided stainless steel fuel line to go across the brace when my y-pipe caused the stock exaust to rub right there. I thought i had an exhaust leak, BUT no, look for signs of rubbing, then get creative.

Good luck!

Thank you very much. I hopefully will take it to the dealer and have them resolve it for free, however.

I would be certain that they will fix it for free. I hear about alot of warrantees not covering exhaust.....

Next thing you know you are responsible for a $90 diagnosis fee (bs).

About two weeks ago the same thing happened when I started my car. I called the dealer for a check up and they said that there's a hole in in the muffler. Not covered by the warrenty. The noise gets louder when I accelerate and I'm sure people can hear me comming. I was told that I can replace the muffler or have it cut and a pipe welded on.

The one thing the warranty will cover is the diag. The worst thing they can do is tell me they won't cover the repair. If it is something like the muffler should I just buy an aftermarket and have a muffler shop install it?

That may be my case.

However, why wouldn't exhaust be covered under the warranty? Is it wear and tear?
