auto tranny reverse lockout.

auto tranny reverse lockout.
I know in the 2k2 auto..you can only switch to reverse (from neutral) if your foot is on the brake...but what if ur foot is on the brake and you are moving? (anybody accidently almost shift into reverse or stupid enought to try it?) when you approach a crawling speed(about 3 mph) you can hear a small click in the shifter...is that the reverse lockout unlocking??

I don't think that clicking is the interlock disabling. Even at complete stops, you can't shift from neutral to reverse without fully depressing the brake. I understand the reasoning behind it, but find it annoying nevertheless.

Yea, I think it is the lock unlocking because I will just push the brake down far enough to feel and hear it and I am able to shift, even if I am not 100% stopped. I mean, the even slightest roll where you wouldn't even realize you were rolling. But I don't see if you are going at a high speed and slam on the brake why you wouldn't be able to shift into reverse...try it and after your tranny blows up, let us know...

OK nobody gets what I am saying, just think...what if you stop very hard to avoid something and you accidently hit your shifter up to reverse by accident?? Im sure it has happened to people, as Im just curious to see if that is in fact a safety lockout for that. No, Im not gonna try it and let my tranny blow just asking a simple question.

Yah actually I was f'ing around trying to do reverse 180s in a abandoned wet parking lot and I did that. I was still hauling *** forward. So yes it is possible the tranny doesnt sense your speed but rather the brake pedal. So techniquely its possible.

OK well i CAREFULLY tested my theory, and the conclusion is NO, you cannot shift into reverse in a 2002 automatic maxima if: You are going over about 5 MPH and/or your foot isnt on the brake. Just go over 15 MPH, slowly slow down and listen for the click in the shifter when you approach about 4 or 5 mph. that is the thing unlocking to let you into reverse.
