I've had mine changed when I did my valvebody recalibration. I'm currently using Redline ATF...
Cost? Get 5 bottles and change them yourself. Have you changed your oil before? If you have, this shouldn't be a problem.

Red Line ATF
The shop I take my old car to recommends Red Line for Mazda and Nissan. The second in charge there has a Max. I decided to let them put Red Line in my Mazda Protege. If it makes a difference in a car with 120k miles then I'll tell ya'll next week. Supposedly it promotes slicker shifts, doesn't boil or froth, and keeps better pressure.
Redline ATF
OK, got my Mazda 5sp back last night. Have driven for 60 miles and can say the following about Redline:
- transmission whine is louder
- shifts are a lot easier, even over redline. Used to get all mushy and refuse to shift to next higher gear once the engine was over 5500rpm
- the transmission slides into gear much easier than it has ever done!
- the final connection between clutch and tranny is more solid - it feels like the clutch is grabbing easier - like the pressure is better
it cost me $35.80 for the fluid.
don't know if this means a maxima will be better off but I figure both cars have to deal with metal grinding against metal.
