P0420 ECU update help

Greets,

My 2K cali emission max has a P0420 and I've tried 2 times now unsuccessfully to get them to look at the car to see if it needs the ECU update.

I've been to 2 service centers and they are basically trying to take me for a ride. They are suggesting I change the O2 sensor(s) and cat, etc in that order to fix the prob but I am asking them to first check/update the ECU.

I've read numerous posts on this and need to know how everyone got this resolved. Are you running O2 simulator(s)? Or did the update fix it? I notice a few posts that said (blackbirdvq i think) the update will not fix it.

Service center is also telling me that the I have to pay the $90 diag fee even though I know the code just for 10 min work tops to read the ECU p/n and see if my ecu needs the update.

They also showed me something saying on their computer after punching in my VIN that if my car was due for the update it would be listed under the campaign field. Does any know if this is true?

Need advice I'm going back there soon ...

The last two things you said are true.

I've had the ECU update twice on two different vehicles. I went in, they told me the diagnostic fee would be waived if it fell under warranty. Both times the fee was waived and the ECU updated.

Now you should note that the ECU update complies to 2001 cali-spec vehicles. You will have to check your VIN and model year on the following site to see if it applies to you also:

go to inside publications and TSBs

much thanks Larrio

I got this fixed under warranty on Sat 14, 06. I ran into Hogan who works at the service center and I'm all setup. Timing advance also done. Car drives like a loco thoroughbred. After experiencing it, I'm a 17 deg timing adv believer.

If someone can make sense of these in terms of p/n please shed some light. I was expecting the new p/n to be higher?

old p/n 23710-3Y119
new p/n 23710-2Y173

true?

Im a newbie and i was wondering... my ses light came and its codes referred to to both front 02 sensors and their wiring. Ive been driving around with for a while, all of a sudden the light goes off. I checked to see if the bulb burned out and all went to autozone for a diagnosis. They said everything was perfectly fine. But i dont believe that. can u guys help in your opinions and thoughts of what i should do?

my SES light just went off after driving about two months with P0430 code. I think it depends on gas you use. However it will come on again. Just got O2 to instal this weekend.

After enough drive cycles the SES may clear if the condition has not re-occurred in a while.

It is best to go have this checked for the ECU update (see TSB that match your code).

Mine came on and went off 3 times before catching it.

It will be back unless u get it fixed or get an O2 simulator (guaranteed).

Is there a separate code for the O2 sensor itself or will it come up w/the Precats?

Sort of. The code will tell if it's the bank1 (closer to dash P0420) or bank2 (closer to bumper i think P0430) O2 sensor.

P0420 and P0430 are for the secondary o2's monitoring catalyst efficiency

There are a few others dealing with the primary o2's and the heater elements also. Check the FSM to make sure
