Power Window Grinding Issues

After a search and coming up empty, I'll now ask your assistance. My drivers side window suddenly began grinding going up and down (and going slower than normal). I'm hoping it just needs lubrication, although being sudden it could be a part(s) failure. The sound is as if there was gravel in the tract. That's the best description.

Anyone else experienced this? If so, what was it?
Is there a how-to on window lubrication?
Is there a how-to on drivers side door panel disassembly?

I'd like to get at this Saturday before it fails in the down position with my luck.

Thanks All!

I had a similar issue. Didnt really have grinding, but the windows - both driver and passenger - went up very slowly. Use silicone lubricant for that; it should do the trick.

Others may have a different way of doing it, but I lowered the window all the way, sprayed both sides, wound it back up, and repeat like twice.

Thanks...
Where abouts did you do the spraying?
Front of window, rear of window, inside glass surface, outside of glass surface?
Did it leave residue on your windows after doing it?

I had no residue after I did this about 9 months ago. I dont have a picture of my car, but in this pic, the red arrows show where I sprayed.

Make sure you spray in the groves (window tracks)

OK Thanks all. I'll try all suggestions, but my issue sounds like it's down in the mechanism itself, like someone poured sand down inside the door. It's a real ugly sound

Same EXACTLY problem here.

First I have to distinguish something: i always had the "slow up and slow down" problem... but never really ever found the famous silicone spray.

Now my issue and Skier is worse than normal window speed and lubricants: it all happened AFTER (or during) the freaking freeze out we had few days ago (temp went from hi-50s to lo-15 same day).

Either soemthing internal frozen and got broken, of the freaking snow went inside the tracks and metled leaving some sand or whatever... i dunno.

But it is WORSE (way worse) than the normal slow-window-issue. My window now GRINDS!!!!

It is terrible... i ahve to open my door to swipe my gate-card because i am afraid the window will get stuck open.

Anyone else EVER heard of this ????

Same problems here...

So I lubed the hell out of the whole window assembly but no dice. The problem began when I rolled the window down when there was some snow/ice buil up on the window. I am guessing that something slipped in the track or the cable winding within the motor assy. My next step is to head to a pick-a-part and pick up a motor assy and give ot a go. I will try to seperate the assy from the window to see if there are any improvements.

same problem here, i used 3 in 1 oil on the tracks, and i had good results untill it gets below freezing, but they dont get stuck like they used to. Also, has anyone looked at the bottom of these windows? (the part the regulator grabs onto to move the window up and down) it looks like when they cut the window from the factory, that it is all wavy. i dont know why but it looks to me that its causing my window to get pulled crooked and get stuck.

So its beyond cold here fellas, were talking like -40 and I have the grind in the drivers window. Is oiling the tracks without removing the panel the best thing to do? I was considering looking for a new motor and regulator which is what I thought it was at first. The grinding is driving me nuts, and I'm worried about opening my window too! Help!

What sorta oil should I be using to lube up the window track?

If you've got an actual grind you've got a failing part inside of the window... if you've got a more screechy sound the tracks may be dry due to cold weather, dryness, etc. If you've got the screech and the slowness definitely lubing the tracks is the way to go; if you've got a grind sound you may be looking at a regulator.

ETA: Searching actually nets results. http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...oing-gone.html

well i oiled one with the panel off, and one with it on because i was running out of time to work and they both oiled up nicely, but its been below zero all this week and i used 3 in 1 oil so there was no rolling them suckers down in that. but i dont know what kind of lubricant to use other than 3 in 1? so if yal got any ideas, i'd love to hear em and get her fixed.

I had an RL that made a horrible grinding sound, ended up being the regulator. The pulley was plastic and all tore up, then the line got all twisted around it.

This happened to me after I replaced the driver's door and window on my 1997. It's never gotten any worse two years later, fortunately...it's just a minor annoyance for me.
