Roll cages?

anyone have a roll cage in their car? im interested in having one installed and im sure it will have to be custom. the chasis stiffening and protective aspects are appealing, but i think it might look goofy in a maxima.

anyone have one? pics?

If you don't have a 4 or 6 point harness, raceing buckets and dont wear helmet, roll cage might cause more harm them help in case of an accident. Sub frame connectors and a roll-bar (overhead) should be good enough for a street driven vehicle.

apparently reading is hard for you. a full rollcage stiffens the car, thus improving the handling ability. also, if its a good cage, if the car rolls........youre safe. thats what i want. i DO think it would look weird in a max, which is why im asking about it.

and whats to say i dont FI the car and make it so a roll cage is needed......good assumptions.

I think BlackBirdVQ wants to install it as well.

even if you put some sort of forced induction set up on your car, you still won't need a roll cage. the fastest maxima ever only ran a 11.1 - somehow i don't think you're going to be running 7s. and if you flip your car, it's because you're an idiot - plain and simple.

If you want chassis stiffening, look into SFCs or foam filling.

If you want better handling, you'd be better off to get new springs/struts, a rsb, and ftsb. As far as the safety aspect, I ask you in what situation would your maxima be flipped?

From reading your profile, you currently have no suspension upgrades. Why not start there first?

agreed, sort of. but you dont have to just roll a car for the safety of a roll cage to be beneficial you know.

but i read everything else everyone posted too. i did add progress springs......and a front strut tower car, but thats it so far. i will work on the suspension later, i have a date with osama soon.

what track do you go to that a roll cage is required for cars only running 7s and below?

whats this foam filling?

Did you upgrade your struts along with those springs? I hope so.

You should also try a RSB, and either a Stage I or Stage II LTB as well.

A 6-point roll bar is required by the NHRA for cars running 11.49 or quicker. If a max ran low 11s or quicker, it would need a 6 pt (not really a full "cage" but a roll bar nonetheless). The full cage isn't required until 135 mph trap speeds or 9.99 ET.

A forged VQ35DE with a big snail is quite capable of running single digit 1/4 mile times. It's been done, just not in a FWD.

With that said, if I were setting up a maxima strictly for handling, I would look into foam filling the frame, both stage Frame Connectors, all strut and sway bars, major weight reduction, all polyurethane bushings, lightweight 17's and the best tires you can possibly buy. A cage is overkill IMO.

Roll cage??? Not a bad idea. I just got off the phone with my dad and I think I'm going to put a roll cage in his Lincoln Towncar. He drives pretty fast too!

mmm...unless you're running less than 10 seconds, then you don't need a roll cage.

Have you ever driven a car with a roll bar? For a dailey driven car it gets to be annoying real fast.
I was driving an 11 second car with a 6 point roll bar over the summer for 2 weeks while doing a 6 speed swap on my other car. Even with a drivers side swing out it got old real fast. Not to mention the serious lack of room in the back seat. Sure it got comments when opening the door and people saw the bars but it's really not practical for something that sees more street than track.

I think I30Krab has a roll bar. Mardi Gras technically needs one according to NHRA.

A true roll cage is impractical for a FWD 4 door car as everyone has said.

I think you're confusing roll "bar" with roll "cage". A roll cage goes fully around the passenger compartment, and usually through the firewall as well. A full roll cage in many cases will make it so you have to exit the car through the window, since there are bars across the doors....

in either case, they are pretty much unnecessary for what you'll be doing in a maxima. Check in the autocross and road racing section - I'm not aware of anyone in there who has one - very few even have roll bars.
