OBD II scanners who has one?

Hey guys, being a former 4th gen'r I was able to retreive my codes via the turn screw and count method on the ECU. I don't currently have any codes but I was wondering what kind of OBD II scanners you have?, how much? and where you got them? Would this one do the job it's certainly cheap enough?:

http://cgi.ebay.com/OBD-2-CHECK-ENGI...QQcmdZViewItem

Or how about this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MakeTrack=true

or set up to this?:

It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want only "Check Engine" or in our case "Service Engine Soon" light info, then any OBD-II scanner should be fine.

Some read and clear codes only - they don't tell you what the code means, they just give you the code. Others read and clear codes, as well as provide a definition of the code. Still others will do all of the above and provide live data stream info.

The heavy duty scanner (read - more $$$$) will do all of the above, as well as provide ABS and SRS light info and in some cases reprogram somethings.

I sell tools , so if you have any questions give me a call - 800-441-6117 , no commitment, consider it free info.

He is from Canada, we don't have AutoZone here

For scanner option, I use Actron like Epacy mentioned... I picked it up on eBay...

CanadianTire (Parts Source too) has the third one you showed on sale quite often for under CDN $150...

Does anyone have the Innova 3100? I'm guessing we don't need the 3110 for the C.A.N?

you may not need CAN now but many cars have it and all will by 2008. The 3100 won't work on any of the newer CAN cars.

It doesn't seem the Actron's or at least the 9145 don't have the CAN either, but by 2008 I will have probably driven over or destroyed the scanner by then anyway!

Does anyone use the Innova? The 3110 is CAN, the 3100 not, just wondering how they compare to the Actron, they seem to be a little cheaper price wise?

Does the unit itself explain the codes or do you have to refer to the manual? thanks

Most powertrain(P###) obdII codes are generic. You still need to look at the manual to get a good explanation. I have manuals on CDs so i just print out the trouble shooting read it and get a good understanding then go to the car to work the trouble. What this model does for you is give you live readings of the engine ex temp, maf, knock, and it goes on, its not as complete as some of the more expensive ones. for everyday use it;s fine.

scan tools

does anyone use Equus Innova 3110
I have been looking at many obd 2 scan toools
ones that use laptops (scan tool)and ones that dont
how much more information can I get from the ones that use laptops vs the Equus Innova 3110 .
some of the laptop programs are scantool, digimoto, obdscan, obd2.
are their problems with the software taht anyone knows about???
or will I be better off with the Equus Innova 3110 ?
I have 5 cars and all use obdII
I am looking for a reason why to buy one vs the other
they all run around $100-$160

I bought the Innova 3100 from Canadian Tire for $149 when it was on sale. As another poster mentioned it is on sale fairly regularly from $249.

Also, the 3100 does cover CAN, I am reading the dcumentation and it says, "The OBD 2 Code Reader is compatible with all OBD 2 protocols, including CAN"

The newer Innova 3100 can do CAN... the one sold originally could not. I picked this one up recently

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...nce&n=15684181

My other laptop based scanner won't work anymore as I think the serial connector somehow got damaged. I wanted a non-laptop based one to dump and clear codes and this one does great. Maybe down the road, I'll look into getting a better laptop based scanner that does more...

I bought this exact one!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CAN-O...25145551QQrdZ1

Excellent little unit does everthing I've ever needed, simple to use.

It has CAN and it gives you the definitions right on the scanner itself, I've used it on the Max and the wife's Odyssey, also on a buddy's Altima so it's more than paid for itself. Funny my wife left the iginition in the on position in the Odyssey and ran the battery flat. Jumped the van and got "check Engine light" for curiosity sake I called the stealer to ask how much to run the check and they said $75 and that was if nothing was wrong and they could do a reset ( we don't have auozone up here, there is a place that will do it for free but I just don't trust them! .... I think they'll invent something wrong anyway!) Anyway my scanner read ECM malfunction, I cleared it with the scanner and it never came back! Another $75 saved. These things are worth there wait in gold IMO, because even if you can't fix the trouble at least you know what it is before you get it fixed so you can't be told otherwise.

The best deal is Autoxray EX_Link scanner. In addition to the usual read/clear code, it can display live sensor data and capture for later analysis. Also CAN protocl capable. This is a discontinued model on sale for $99. I got one and it is great. http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=99

CAN is going to be the standard for codes and protocols on every car regardless of model by 2008 where as now there are differences, so if you buy a scanner today and it's not CAN compatible if you try it use it on a vehicle 2008 or newer it won't work.

I understand the meaning of CAN
I looked at the scan tool mentioned and there is no mention of CAN
so I was asking
how is the tool can capeable when its not in the service manual or the internet where the item is sold....
other words where did he get that info that it was can capeable???

The autoxray web site is not clear about the EZ-Link and its CAN capability. I just received my unit and it comes with the yellow OBDII connector. According to their web site, yellow connector is CAN ready. You don't have to buy any hardware or software upgrade to get CAN. I don't have a car with CAN to verify, however. So I am not 100% sure.

For all thoes just buying a scanner to 'clear codes' i would say you are better off to just unplugging the battery for the night.

As far as using it for performance monitoring and malfunction troubleshooting, dont buy a generic. Typically all generics will just display the P code and nothing else. Without any freeze frame or live data, it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint the root cause.

I bought the OBD2/CAN+nissan enhanced PC scan tool from www.autoenginuity.com during the initial nissan offering/group deal. So far it has treated me well, you can record live drive data directly to .cvs files, perform actuations like fuel cut, engine balance, ignition timing and a few more. It supports mode $6 as well as O2 sensor graphing (2 at a time), and it comes with a 'speed tester' program for quarter mile times, calculated HP/tq, 0-60, stop distance etc which is kind of fun. And it can also perform the target ignition timing adjustment on nissans as well as the Idle learning commands. Comes with a year of free upgrades for the Nissan enhanced sensors, and free future upgrades for OBD/CAN etc. All P0 and most P1 code definitions are built in so you dont need to search the internet, books etc.

I have no basis for comparison as this is the first scan tool I have purchased, but it fits my needs just fine price is right, and the support is great.
