egr valve thoughts

Anyone ever attend to this piece on a 2k? I have about 80k on the clock and I know this gets gunked up over time, and Im poor so I look for the cheap or free tricks to keep the car running smoothley. Anyways, do you guys clean yours? I've heard some people take it off, I wouldn't pass inspection though so that's out. I just didn't know if the hassle of removing it would be worth it after cleaning.

If you have no issues with the car, leave it alone. The EGR system operation is "tested" by the ECM during the normal driving of your car.

Correct. The fault code can be the result of an incorrect response (MAP+) to the "test", or a circuit problem etc. I believe that eventually an O2 sensor "lean" code may get set because of lack of EGR. EGR helps to control NOX by preventing short term lean mixtures under certain operating conditions.

So, P. Samson, would you say then, that it would be a bad idea to block this port to try and gain some performance value? Just curious. I have a friend who did that on his 93 Prelude V-tec, and loved it. He is trying to talk me into doing this, but I am sceptical.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Don't do it. You will create problems for yourself. Instead of gaining performance, you may lose it instead. You may aggravate any tendency to ping/detonate and suffer the corresponding loss of performance, possibly failing any emissions test, along with the above mentioned throwing codes and putting on the SES light. Your friend's Prelude has an early OBD l vacuum sensing, vacuum operated EGR valve. Your Maxi has an EGR valve that is programmed by, operated, and tested electronically by the ECM. It's apples and oranges.

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation
highly unlikely to get ping just because u block EGR valve. u will get better performance as you get new air into ur combustion chamber instead of exhaust leftovers from EGR. EGR is for emissions only, and yes you will fail emissions, but u can always put it back on. and yes, u will also get codes, but u know there's really no problem. a lot of people block their EGR ports when they want performance. u would lose gas mileage as well though. up to u.
p.s. use premium fuel!

Thanks guys.... I am thinking that the performance value does not outway the annoyance of the codes and other issues. Thanks for the input!!
