there's an entire forum here devoted to that:

Yes I know, I read over a few threads in there.

What I was asking you, don't you feel you will have more gains if you took that road in addition to helping out the air intake system?

Or does the cost prohibit you from going down that road (upgrading engine internals to complement the air intake improvements)

I'm not all that interested in doing internals on the maxima. Bolt-ons only. I have another car to do the REAL engine work on

So....what are your initial impressions? Is this indeed a worthy successor to the original GAB?

yes....with the 4 holes plugged, now that the ECU has adjusted, the car seems to have more power up high (like a GAB) and no low-end loss at all (like stock)...plus it can only be heard when at WOT on a hard upshift.

of course, it's all subjective...but I plan to leave it like this, FTW.

Have you "toyed" around with the combos? I'm too cheap to buy plugs from Home Depot and too lazy to test myself...

Pretty cool. Can u really feel a difference when changing it up? The only reason I ask is people would always say the butt dyno is never accurate and I would think it would be hard to determine one setup from another. Interested in seeing dynos if you ever get around to it.

I've had a similar set-up for about a year now, nice job on the holes Irish! Having had mine for a year and going back/forth with the unhacked cover i really still can't tell if there's really any benefit to this design GAB at low-mid RPM. But at high RPM you can definitely tell there's a bit more pull, regardless of sound. It's not as mean as a Frankencar IMHO, but it's definitely a better "sound" upgrade to the stock setup without getting too obnoxious.

As far as the holes and if the air goes straight to the MAF, it doesn't really matter. Looking at my filter now, the "dark spots" is right where the airbox opening is, and near where the MAF is. That's where most of the dirt is concentrated.

so your saying have the wholes which would concentrate air directly to the MAF blocked because there would be more of a chance that dirt would get through?

it looks like a little cup, with a center bit and teeth around the edges. It's for drilling large holes in things....look in the drill bit section at the hardware store.

This isn't the bit that Irish is talking about, but works just as well

And although not very obvious, you can see where most of the dirt is concentrated on the filter.

RPM activated switch

Hey irish, I was thinking about what you or someone else said about a GAB with a cockpit switch to open close a flap on the Air box; I gave it alittle thinking this weekend and thought it would be nice to have an RPM activated flap. It'le cost more than the regular GAB, but would be great for low and high end performance..............What do you think?

How would you accomplish that? It would be a cool and probably satisfying experiment but I think you'd find it more of a hastle than it's worth.

The same way that you, or whoever makes one with a motorized flap, can use an RPM activate switch from a nitrous application, just some thoughts.

I have been thinking about how to adapt an "old fashion" manual choke cable to just under the dash that would be hooked to a GAB opening and would be controlable fron the cockpit... A lack of time and a lot of travel in the last two weeks is about the only thing that has kept me from trying something like this...

What if you tap the RPM sensor wire and get that into a format that can play with some very basic computer software. If RPM is within this range, open flaps and if RPM is lower than this number close flaps.

Hey, I'm just tossing out some ideas.

Come on people. Everyone remembers a time when they did not know all of the things they know now. Learning is a process. There are no such things as shortcuts. Search, read and learn people.

I get upset when people ask for help about a topic *I* had to research and learn on MY *OWN* versus just being told the answer.

isn't it better to just use a micro switch to activate the "super GAB"
so when u hit WOT the super GAB opens up

That would involve some sort of actuator that opens it up.

Rigging up an actuator to the airbox seems like a bit of work, but if it's so easy, why don't you try it? Be sure to post lots of pics

Irish already discussed that idea with some here.... there's probably even an old thread on it somewhere. It wasn't worth the trouble.

hey fellas, wondering how this mod would be affected if the stock scoop was
1.) Completely removed, or
2.) The big hole pointing down at the bottom of the scoop was plugged?

Thoughts?

Holy Resurrection Mannetti

-IMO as mentioned in another thread about this (started by me-GAB minus the ghetto)
my 02 has the whole scoop removed-love the power and sound
my 01 has it in due to the sensor-helps keep cool air coming in at speed
Its whatever you want to do

lol though it might as well be posted in the original to see if someone has any theories on different combinations of holes and scoop setups.
