I recently bought a 2001 MAxima GLE , and I have 500 miles on it now. The problem is the gas milege. I noticed the car is getting only 200-250 miles on a full gas of tank in city , its supposed to get like 350. What milege are you guys getting in city with your maximas, also anyone know what the problem may be with my car?

I get around 21 or 22 mpg in mixed driving. That comes out to about 310 or 320 miles per tank I think. Once your engine has broken in, you will start to get better gas mileage. Thats usually the case with new engines. But city driving will give you consistantly lower mileage.

gas prob..

Lol i was like u freakin out y my car had such bad mileage. Cuz i rememberd watchin commercials like sayin the 2k Max can get like 502 on a full tank. I was pissed as hell and took my car to the dealer, i waited there half a day, and all the service guy said was there was nothin wrong and they cant do anything bout it ( god knows if they even checked my car ). So im afraid tats the way it is ..., and with the 2001 max havin a little worse mileage than the 2k ones i think its bout right tat u can only get bout 250 per tank, cuz i am currently still only gettin bout 300+ per tank, which is bout 20-21 mpg city/highway. All tat in the ads were bull****. However, wen i took a long trip to SF, i got bout 400+ per tank on all freeways. Juss be thankful u didnt get a SUV, now does eat gas !!!

tK718,

Maybe you should get your right foot checked out. I think you are suffering from the "Lead foot Syndrome". It's ok,
many of us here in the Maxima.org are suffering from this disease.....

Actually, I drive in the city everyday. My car is gonna hit the 20K mark in a week, guess wut? the MPG still sucks!!!
I get no more than 270 miles per tank, and thats with the little pump lighting up on my dash!!!

whats really going on...

I too get 220-250 city mpg in my 2k. Its not a lead foot, its emissions. for the first 15 mins or so, the car runs VERY rich. if you only drive 5 mins to work like me, you will get 14-16 mpg. If you take a long trip, you will be amazed as it will almost double. Also, if the car is warmed up, in the city expect 18-20.

You can call grab the Consumer reports that tells about this. It was the one about 6 months back that covered v6 sedans. The A6, Accord, Max, domestics all got 13-16 in their rating. there is a side bar explanation.

yeah, prem gas too.. it sucks.

btw, our Pathfinder gets better gas mileage for short trips.

On a long trip to St Louis, I got about 450 miles to a tank of gas cruising at 75 to 80 mph. In and around the area I live (mountains of North Carolina), to and from work which includes a very congested little side road (same one that ate my other Maxima due to a trailer hitch collision ), Ive been getting around 320 to 350 miles to the tank, unless I am in a frisky FLOOR the sucker mood, then I notice this car drinks gas faster than I do a good beer. I fill up every 2 weeks. My Acura Legend was getting 17 to 20 mpg, so this is a much better deal, although my gf's 2K Sentra kicks my Max's mpg lol. Oh well. I have more room and more creature comforts. By the way, i'll never own another Acura. What a POS. Great engine but the rest of the car fell apart. All Hail Nissan.

My 2001 AE 5 speed has 1800 Miles. I'm currently
getting about 300 miles (500KM) before the gas light
comes on. Obviously with a heavier right foot these
numbers will drop.

good freeway mileage, bad city mileage

I noticed the car get great freeway mileage ( i travel at steady 75-80 mph), usually at 350+ a tank ( usually it takes 14 gallons to fill up the car).

But in the city stop-and-go traffic, the car gets pretty bad mileage, i barely get 20 mpg under that condition.

The fuel efficiency does improves at bit after the car has been broken in (after 3-4000 miles) according to my own observation.

Like TimW said, if you take long commute that's where the car shines with very good mileage.

ehh, am I lost?

oh, sorry, that 5 in the 5th gen forum looked like a 3 to me

Anyways, I get about 150 miles on a full tank in my 3rd gen SE, thats horrible, feel like I'm driving an 8 cylinder, and this is about 70% highway....
Bad gas milage could be because of sparks, fuel filter, air filter, and O2 Sensor, usually with the bad O2 sensor u get the worst milage.. but you guys all have practically brand new Maximas, while I have nearly 94k on it now.. I would suppose that is the milage you should be getting, I don't ****ing believe that retarted TV commercial, 502 miles until an empty tank? yeah sure...
I wish I had gas milage like you people.

Stop *****ing about the range. Do the real math, that needle is way off. I fill up with ~250 miles, but it equates mathematically to ~22 mpg. That is by no means bad for a V6, get a I-4 if you want more mileage. I drove from LV to Bloomington with a full car (re: rear wheels tucked) with the cruise set @ 90 and i got ~27 mpg. I am not complaining.

xtantmaxima....

I dont think anyone is complaining about hwy mileage... their city rating is deceptive and was even lowered for 2k1. Its understanding emissions, not a defective fuel gauge. I think getting 14-16mpg is worth *****ing about. As Consumer Reports rated V6's, the maxima is in the middle at 15-something mpg. Still its not something people realize when buying the car (or the cost of ownership). For some, like me, I could be driving a big SUV and getting the same mpg. That just seems off to me. Again, its not the max only. The A6 got 13.something on that same report.
