What can excessive wheel hop do to the car?

Ive been having this problem with the maxima and wheel hop, im not trying to do "nasty burnouts" or anything on purpose but like those times when your making a left turn across a two lane road and one person stops to flag you and another car is coming and you have to make that turn FAST, one wheel bounces like its coming off the car. Another time i pulled out from making a right turn and a car was making a left turn at the same time and i had to stomp it to get out of the way and it shook the crap out of the car. Does it in wet or dry pavement, turns or straightaways. It doesnt do anything weird now but im wondering if there are any bad effects or problems this could cause that i should look out for, or start saving some $$ up. I know in RWD ive heard wheel hop can absolutely kill the transmission but not sure about FWD, and how tough the maximas powertrain is.

Oh its a 5 speed btw.

I get wheel hop in my 5spd once in a while as well...One time it broke the muffler right where it connects to the b-pipe (problem lots have had but maybe not from wheel hop) and another time it broke a hanger off near the middle of the exhaust setup...and those were definitely both causes of harsh vibrations throughout the car from wheel hop.

With the drop and Proxes4 I only get hop on hard launches on wet pavement. I'd think maybe the tranny, struts and maybe axles would get worn if excessive wheel hop occurred. EDIT: I'd say motor mounts as well and maybe mess up your alignment.

It's damaging to your transmission. The excessive wheel hop can also messup your axels.

If you want to quell the wheel hop..Invest in some better motor mounts...or fill them with some apoxy..will help allot with the wheel hop!

Or you can just upgrade to a larger/heavier rims.

Damn how hard of a launch do you have to do to get wheel hop. I have never had this problem yet.

Check the stuts. Mine is about to blowup and the ride is absolutely horrible (like the whole vehicle is falling apart) specially at slow speeds like 25-35MPH and any uneven surface will trigger a wierd feeling.

This hopping puts a lot of stress on the upper mounts. I have ordered the struts and will be fixing it this week.

I have HLSD and I don't think that it helped wheel hop much. But I only got wheel hop redlining it in 1st, on a hard 1-2 shift, dumping the clutch in 1st at 5000 rpms, etc. Stiffer motor mount inserts on the other hand, have made a world of difference.

I was thinking the LSD would actually lead to more wheel hop than reduce it. I have a VLSD in my car and I've been getting wheel hop in wet conditions. I haven't even tried a launch in a long time. I should try in dry conditions to see if I get spin or hop.

How bad is the vibration at idle after installing stiffer motor mounts?

Interesting theory... although I'm too hungry now to address it.

Could it just be a traction problem for you? I mean that's what I've always attributed mine to in the wet....

Definitely noticeably more than stock mounts, however, they sort of break in over time and you kinda get used to it. IMO iits really not too bad. I'm only reminded of it when there's loose change somewhere or something in the glovebox is vibrating.

I also have an issue with my rear exhaust manifold rubbing the motor mount bracket, so that's causing more vibrations in the cabin.

Ha!

I think it's traction as well as driver error. I just tried a hard launch at lunch at they spun great. The last time I had hop was when it was wet out. I guess I attribute the hop to the tires and them almost getting too much grip in the wet as opposed to spinning.

What brand of motor mounts do you use?

I'm getting excessive wheel hop at the track, but on the street/rain i'm fine, I put the car up on the lift the other day and my mounts are flawless, no rips/leaks...nothing?

Energy Suspension motor mounts.
K-Sport/D2/Tein coilovers.

That should effectively kill your wheel hop and boost cornering ability.

If you have $$$, get some LTB's and SFC's to complete your suspension.

Really dont want wheel hop here and I havent had it with my automagic. If I torquebrake it the wheels just spin and spin, but just dont hit even the smallest bumb in th road or it will bang like no other.. I seriously thought I broke something the first time I went over a crack in the road when doing a little burnout. I am hoping that as I add more power my suspension mods will take care of the wheel hop. I wonder if the SFCs and LTB will make sure I never get this problem as well as H&R springs. I dont think I'de ever do the motor mounts.. this is my daily cruiser I want it to ride like a dream, just not float like one.

BTW wheel hop is never a good thing. Its much easier on your drivetrain to just roast the tires. Wheel hop is not only bad because of the pressure your putting on your drivetrain but also because of the drivetrain shock as the tires do momentarily get traction

I was thinking, is it more likely to occur on cars with manual tranny? If I spin both front wheels, i'm almost always getting wheel-hop...

Yes the problem..is more so w/ manual tranny's. The reason is the automatics have a tq converter..to help prevent wheel hop. I did a nice burnout in a parking lot...no wheel hop what so ever.

i get wheel hop in my 98 5spd. its got VLSD and i notice it more or less in wet conditions. i wasnt trying to do a burnout or anything i just turned right and had to accelerate up to traffic speeds and i thought my teeth were going to break it seemed that bad. I notice it only seems like my 5spd does it the auto just spins its wheels, but my 02 auto is a different story, it hops a bit but not nearly as bad as the 5spd.
