Ok sorry I dont post much just lurk, I noticed today that when my car is running I only get exhaust coming out of one of the pipes off the stock muffler, the passenger side pipe. What the heck? Does this mean that the muffler is blocked or fried or what? Anythoughts?
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!

the maxima actually has an ingenius chambered exhaust...at low rpms only one pipe is "open," so some backpressure remains. Under heavy load/WOT, a little "flap" opens and then both pipes have exhaust coming out.
perfectly normal.
perfectly normal.

Secretly I was hoping you were going to tell me it was fried and I would "have" to go out and get a new flowmaster or something of that nature.

Yeah I remember seeing a link somewhere on these pages to a nissan site that had a little tutorial on how this worked, I was pretty impressed.

Klop..As you learn more about engines you will be amazed at what effect different things can have on different aspect of a engine. I'll give you a good example of something you have most likely seen but didn't realize it can add up to 5HP. Look at the exhaust pipe on some cars you will notice they have a half circle cut in them. Some are even cut at an angle. This has an effect on the pulse wave from the exhaust and does effect flow. On some GM cars it adds about 5HP. It's amazing stuff.
Irish... I would like to know if you don't mind a little more about how this extra valve/flap in the muffler works. Is it mech. or what...?

from an old article:
a new variable capacity muffler derived from the one on the high performance Nissan Skyline GT-R. A special muffler flap valve, using high temperature aerospace spring technology and materials, opens at 2,000 rpm and above – reducing exhaust system backpressure
