I avg 230-250 a tank 13 gallons 93 octane $40

now that 93 is $3.05 a gallon I put 89 octane 13 gallons $40 and I think Im getting better gas mileage. Make sense?

So you're purposely destroying your car?

You do know a Maxima was dynoed using 89 and 93 and there was a 14WHP and 20WTQ loss right?

Yes I use to filled up my car with 91 octane, now I use the 89 instead and be a little gentle on the gas pedal off the stop sign.

using 89 instead of 93 will only save you about $3 or 3.50 per tank, so why is everyone right away switching to 89 when gas prices rise?

Because it'll save you $3.00 to $3.50 a tank...?

With noticeable performance loss with 89, id rather spend a little more on 93 and enjoy the car. I think $3 is worth it for me.

93 octane?

doesn't the booklet say that we should use 89-91 octane? or well, that's what the service center at County Line Nissan said

I get close to 300miles per tank running 94 octane 60/40 city/hwy. I'll have to baby the thing (never shift above 3000rpm - except on highways). It just so tempting to redline the car at every stoplight!

No lies...I have a 2k auto-tragic with 126K miles. When I'm on all city driving I get 320 until I hit the low fuel light. That's about 20 to 21 MPG. In the city and highway driving mix I get close to 400, usually 380 to 390 (24 MPG).

It really pays off to keep with the maintenance and your driving habits. I have lightweight wheels (<17 pounds) which probably helps as well.

PS: One of the original reasons I bought the Max was due to the higher range capability. I remember the commercials that stated 500 miles between fill-ups. I knew it was BS for 500 miles, but if I could get 400 miles that would be cool.

I have 22 mpg= 300!!! Why???

Ok my SE 3.5 Max sounds like messed up!!! lol Well anyway my mpg shows 22+ most of the time. Well I fill the tank all the way up to 17.5 gallons and drive. At the end, I end up at 300 miles and need to fill up agian. I don't know what's wrong, the mpg shows 22, so basically I need to be reaching up to 370 miles with 17.5 gas of tank.

Anyone got the same problem going on? Hmmm....

Shurik,

I found the same issue with my '02 6 spd, 85 k. Basically the MPG gauge would read around 30-31 MPG (I drive all hwy) but I really was getting 26-27 MPG when I did the math (gal at fill up/ miles driven since last fill up). Then it dawned on me that the car probably only calculates the MPG when you are moving. It was winter here in MA and I let the car warm up for a few minutes every morning before I left for work- hence the discrepancy.

We'll see if I am correct now that the weather is getting warmer and I won't warm the car up as much. Today it actually said 37.6 MPG when I pulled into work...

try seafoam, and do a tuneup, check your tire pressure. that should help your milage a bit.

yeah some of you are getting real poor gas mileage. i feel like cruise control makes me lose gas mileage b/c it's so jerky, like pushing and releasing of the gas.

Trip computer is CONSISTENTLY optimistic with its mileage calculations. City or highway, it doesn't matter although I think it's even further off in the city. It's 3-4 MPG optimistic on the highway and 5-6 MPG optimistic in the city.

For the record, I have gotten 820km (510 miles) on a tank once with 100% highway. Typically I get about 650km highway and 500km city.

The best way to check your gas mileage is reset your trip tick to ZERO after you fill-up your tank. Next time you get gas check the mileage on the trip tick and compare with the gallons of gas used on the fill-up.

I realized something else last night. The MPG gauge on our cars does not use the full capacity of the tank to calculate the range. I had a reading of 34.4 MPG and a range of 444; that would only mean 12.9 gal! I would find it hard to believe that the car has almost a 5 gal reserve.

Does anyone know how the computer actually calculates the MPG and range?

(I agree that the only real way to know is to DIY when filling up. I just want to understand the craziness of the computer).
