bad habit- breaking keys and remotes..

Ok, I have a bad habit of throwing my keys and because of that I have broken 2 remotes and 2 keys. The keys and remotes still work, but the plastic where they connect to a key ring has busted. I know i need to change my ways, but what are my options- I really like the remote and having a key that won't open the trunk is very inconvienient. I have heard you can get the remotes off ebay and reprogram yourself... is this true? A key isnt that big of a deal, but what are my options? The main thing i need is a working remote that I can put on my key ring.
Thanks

Thanks
this is true - I think I paid around $20 shipped for a slightly used one and instructions to program are easy to find on the net.

True. It's the keys that can get pricey with programming.

Yeah, buy the remotes on Ebay. The most important thing is that you buy the remote that matches your "FCC ID" and "P/N" on your existing remote. I have bought a few with different numbers and when I programmed it, it didn't work at all times. The hazard lamps kept flashing like crazy at times. There's a guy on Ebay that sells brand new ones for cheap...around $35.00 or so. Good luck!

Remote AND programming? I hope they mean they include instructions on how to program because I doubt they'll come out to your car to program the remotes.

This is true I just order a remote and a programing from ebay for a remote wholesalers. I got the remote new in box with a sheet of programming instructions that the dealership performs. If I remember right how you program is
1.) Get in the car
2.) Lock doors with Powerlock
3.) Insert Key 6times and remove it totally from ignition in seven seconds
4.) Then the flashers shoudl blink twice signaling that the programing mode has been entered.
5.) The key should be in the ignition at this point and turn to the ACC position.
6.) Click any button on the remote once. Then unlock the door and open and close the door to finalize programming process.

Hope this helps this works on used remotes as well. But as previously stated make sure remote and fcc codes match your car.

Yeah, that sounds about right except you actually get about a 10 second window instead of 7 seconds inserting the key in/out of the ignition 6 times. And, in step 6, after you press any button on the remote, check to see if the flashers blink again. The process is then completed by unlocking the door and closing it.
