Anybody ever notice a strange sort of buzzing sound when you start up your Max after it's been sitting like overnight or something? I just recently noticed that it's been happening every morning. But only after the car has been sitting for a while. Once it gets warmed up, it usually doesn't do it. Any ideas? I can't tell where it's coming from either. I'm sure I can't be the only one......or can I ?

Does it sound like a small glass jar of metal objects being shaken around for like a split second?

Good luck at your dealer (seriously). It took me about a year to convince them it was there and then I went without my car for a month while they fixed it. They found a whole bunch of stuff broken under the hood.

 

It's so hard to describe the sound. It almost sounds like one of those Kazoo's ( is that even what they're called???. Those little things you get when you go to birthday parties.......that you blow into......that makes that almost buzzing sound). I guess it's almost a buzzing sound.

 

i've heard this sound in my car as well, i know exactly wha tyoure talkin about. ill be watching this thread cause i wanna know what it is. and im aboout to check the TSBs

 

Yeah i had that sound for a while in my i30 until the starter went...but in a brand new top of the line and hasnt been back since..

 

Right after The Deal posted that about checking the TSB's, I did. But, unfortunately,the link didn't work for me. I'll probably try to explain it to the dealer next week and see what they say.

yeah i really want some kind of TSB on paper or something so i can take it in to my dealer. The problem that i have is that i bought my I30 used at a ford(booooo) dealership. I've already experienced their ****ty service the first week i bought the car (with extended 100k warranty)....i had a SES light on and the ****ers would just reset the ecu and be like youre good. I was like...no...take it to nissan on YOUR expense up front i have the warranty and everything plus the 30day warranty that's standard. They *****ed and moaned all the way through until they finally took it to a licensed Nissan Mechanic (not nissan themselves) cheap ******. So i was hoping if someone here could share some findings of some kind of TSB that i can take to them. I'll still be on the look out but anything would help. Thanks sorry for the venting haha peace.

 

ive heard that sound from my max a while back when i shut it off in my garage. i tried to trace it but i couldn't duplicate it. before it went away i followed it to the rear of the car, so my best guess is the fuel pump bleeding the system back or priming it. who knows

 

are you talking about the buzzing sound near the gas tank area? recently i've been getting a buzzing sound around that area. it's only every once in a while when i start the car it'll be buzzing for a minute or two and after driving around a bit it goes away =/ have no idea what it is tho.

 

Not too sure, but it only "buzzes" for like 1 or 2 seconds. Strange.

I think i have this exact same problem. Im no car expert, I bought a modded 98 with a 2k engine in it, so i thought it could have been a million different things. Talked with the original owner and he said its probably the starter. I havent had much time to examine it thoroughly myself, but it sounds exactly like what your problem is.

sounds like a buzzing/grinding for a second or two when the car starts...and only when the car is cold or has been sitting for a while.

I was told to either replace or regrease the starter.

lol a kazoo was a perfect description of it. I didnt have a clue how to describe it when i asked around about it.

I get the same sound from time to time. I have 55k miles and 4 years left on my warranty, so I'm not too worried about it.

Ok, so I've never owned a new car.....or anything with warranty for that matter, so I've never been to a dealer for any type of work. I took it the other day for a "free 100 point inspection." Damn, service writers/advisors, whatever you want to call them are ruthless *****. Maybe just the guy I had, who knows. When I explained to him the sound that I was interested in possibly getting checked out, he didn't even let me finish my sentence. He immediately said that I'd have to leave the car overnight for and have them check it in the morning and pay the diagnostic fee ( $100 something bucks. ) Geez, he didn't even hear me out to see if this was a common problem or nothing. Then, when I asked him ( Very politely....I might add ) if the technician could be a little careful when racking my car up (since it's lowered about 3" all around), He responded," Oh, I didn't even know it was dropped.....that'll be an extra $30 since it's lowered." He then proceeded to tell me how it's difficult to put a lowered car on the lift. Ok, so let me see if I got this staight.......the dealerships wants to charge me $30 to drop 2 pieces of wood on the floor and put my car on the lift? No f--kin thanks. Anyways, the rest of the inspection got done and they said there were no problems. I guess my buzzing issue didn't get resolved. It seems like most of the you guys think it may be the starter. Any other clues or ideas?

 

dealership are as$holes, dont be polite to them, theyll take advantage of you. go there and tell them what you want, if they want to charge you 30 bucks to put the damn blocks to put your car on the lift, then tell them to go screw them self and go somewhere else.

 

He probably would have found a reason to charge you the $30 even if your car wasn't dropped. Last time I got my oil changed (had a coupon), the dealer wanted to charge me $50 to use a "special lift" for my car since it had "large aftermarket sport wheels" on it. I looked at him with utter disbelief and said, "Uhh...those are the factory wheels." Why it would cost more to change the oil on a car with larger wheels, I have no idea. So yeah, I say most dealerships I've been to are bad. I used to drive an extra half hour out of the way to a dealership just to get half decent service. But now that my car is out of warranty, I'm trying to find a good independent place. Not as easy as it sounds. Anyone know of any in the Philly area, let me know.

 

99% of people that ***** about the dealership deserve the way they are getting treated. i have NEVER had a problem with a dealership

 

I have this "kazoo" noise a lot (ROFLMAO BTW that WAS a perfect description... i was sure you were talking about the same noise but cars make billions of fahking noises... but only one kazoo sound ever!!!)
new england winters may have something to do with it but both maximas plus my bro's make this noise when it's really... really cold and sometimes other randomly.... even louder after a BRAND new starter in my 96 max.

Maybe it's a flywheel...



i called a local stealership and the guy was an a-hole... pure bred jacka$$ "no such thing as a 8/80k for emissions" I CRAP YOU NOT his words...

Called another down the street in next town... not so nice on the phone but they fixed everything said maybe a 100 dollar fee BUT DIDN'T CHARGE ME after replaceing half my headers and a cat AND a soft. update!!!

Moral: There are @$$holes that work at dealerships that are working on much nicer cars than they own sometimes... find the good ones.. they are there!

i had the sound for a while. Dealer said that it was the starter pinion gear getting stuck. Last month the starter went out and i had to replace it. $100 and about 1/2 hour in the garage. It's an easy fix.

 

I hope you replace the starter before u get stuck somewhere...put up the dough and get rid of the kazoo

 

Yo Bran - Sorry to hear about your experience. I know it's out of your way to have you car serviced at New City out in town, but you may have to wait awhile cuz they are booked. The earliest they could take in my car is May 30th. I couldn't believe it. Ususally I'd have to wait about about a week and a half but three weeks plus, that's nuts. I'm trying to get in touch with the guy I ususally deal with. He's been really helpful but lately he hasn't returned my calls. I'm gonna be patient on this one cuz he went out of the way for me on the last serivce.

 

If you can deal with the noise for awhile then go for it. In the meantime look for another starter and there is no need to spend the money on a new one. A rebuilt one will do just fine as it's not a part that runs with the car. It only has to function for a few seconds per day, so a rebuilt one should last.

When my starter went out, it took about a week. I would come out of the market and it felt like I had a dying battery. When yours gets to this stage, replace it. Mine actually lasted about a year after the kazoo started playing.

You should be able to get a starter for about $100.00. Mine was $100 no tax and i had to leave the old one with them. Don't go and pay the $250.00 or whatever the dealer wants for the OEM one.

Yeah, maybe I'll look into New City in the future. Our bodyshop orders all of our parts from there. I know all the parts guys, as well as the parts manager (In fact, I just went to Vegas with all of them about 2 weeks ago.). I only went to Tony for the free inspection.......Much closer to our shop. Anyways, we'll see if New City can maybe cut me some slack on a diagnostic.
