I removed all the bolts on the transmission filter and there is one that is different and the nut is spinning together with the bolt. I tried holding the tip of the bolt with pliers and using wrench to get the nut off but the nut is held very tight to the bolt and i am afraid to strip the tip of the bolt.

 

i would stick a flathead scrwedriver right near that bolt and put some pressure down on the bolt so you can turn it but you have to be careful not to damage or scratch up the mating surface... I would tape the screw driver tip with electrical tape.

 

keep turning the screw and it should come off...... if not well use the screwdriver to make pressure to take it out.. good luck

 

I tried everything but the nut just wouldn't give, I even tried gripping the bolt with vise grips and turning the nut with a wrench.I gave up on it and just put everything back together. Looking though the hole, the screen seemed clean so I hope all of it is clean. I was really looking forward to cleaning that screen seeing that I never cleaned it and the car is at 100k.

 

you could always grind it off but i dont know how it will go back on. Either that or bring it to the dealer let them deal with it.

 

when I did mine.. the screen wasn't that dirty....... it is not a big deal.......

 

I did mine this weekend and had exactly the same problem. I was never able to get the nut off the screw. Why did Nissan design this in this manner? All bolts and one nut? Finally, I had to just give up and leave the filter in place.

 

for the simple reason that it wasn't meant to be taken off. The filter screen is made of metal. It really doesn't need to be changed. The only way you can get that nut off is by taking apart half the transmission. I've broken it free before but all it'll do is just spin. Just change the gasket and the fluid and call it a day. It's stupid I know. But that's the way Nissan designed it.

I used the vise grips with the needle nose tip and a small screw driver to get it out.

Never again.

 

Just drop the VB, then you can hold the head of the bolt and remove the nut no problem

On my (original trans, anyway) the bolt was stuck in place enough to both remove and replace (and torque) the nut without having to drop the VB at all.
