Transmission slip from 1st to 2nd gear

I have a 2002 Maxima SE. Has anyone out there experienced a hard shift in their automatic transmission from 1st to 2nd gear? It feels like it slips a little then catches and makes a small clunk noise. It only happens to me when the car is cold and I jump on it a little. I live in South Florida so it is not like it ever gets that cold. It does not happen once the engine and transmission are warm. The car has 72000 miles on it but it has done this for a while. Any ideas? Thanks.

If it doesnt happen when your tranny is warm then I dont think you have a slip problem. Mine did that too, I got a flush with AMSOIL and it solved my issue.

sorry to tell you this, but you are F%#ked. In a few more months the top speed of your car will be around 25 miles per hour, that is if you will be able to get it out of neutral.

Dont listen to that guy, hes being a douche bag. But you really should search before asking questions. Threads like this have been covered so many times. When was the last time you had your tranny flushed?

Thanks alpinestars. I did search and came up with nothing. Could be by novice searching abilities on this site! I did just have the tranny flushed last week and have not experienced the slip but I also have not tried to make it happen. I am glad I have the 100k extended warranty though.

A little helpful tip: Donating 20.00 will go a LONG way on this site ie. searching abilities. That is good that you have the 100K warranty though.

I experienced this. Check your diagnostics. When I did I got p0720. When I took it to the dealership, he had to replace the speed sensor (this switches the transmission when you accelerate). It was about 250 for me.

Yeah P0720 means tranny flush. REMEMBER, when you cant go past 25 mph, a tranny flush does the trick.

Glad I know better.
I'm sure you know my transmission was changed 11 months ago too.

How long has this been going on? I hate to say what you should have done, but I had this exact issue taking place with my car and the valve body solenoid repair was covered under my powertrain warranty.

any update on if you solved this? i have the same issue in my 2000 gle. from a stop it feels like im dragging an anchor then after it shifts it takes off like a rocket. if i accelerate 1/4 to 1/2 throttle i can feel it shift hard into 2nd. at WOT it wont shift into 2nd unless i let off the gas. if im in traffic every time it passes 40 on upshift and 20 on downshift it bangs like someone tapped my bumper. I wanna solve this before something breaks like a mount or something. Gonna try and call nissan on my next break.

edit: 125k, QMI Synthetic MVATF (covers nissan matic D). Got car at 119k and changed fluid at 120k. Fluid still looks good, no burning smell.

Rebuilds are a waste of time, IMO. I'd rather get a low mileage used one and toss it in.

Oh yeah,

Grave digging I see.

This^ Hot pepper&pear marmalade glaze eating guy is right!
Alot of 5.5 a/t transmissions suffer from what we call the Flair between shifts some have it and some dont you will experience a +\- 3-500 rpm surge between shifts.rebuilds are useless just get a low milage unit from car-part.com and install it at a 1/4 price of a rebuilt.
