Is there away to test the ign. coils?

Tried searching but had no luck on the testing if there is a way.

I have a small miss at idle, and before going out and spending $$$$ on new coils I'd like to check them. Anyone know of how it can be done?

yes, do a search, how to search is in the stickies. I just saw it about a week ago in the 5th gen. forum. so you might want to go back and find it that way. You can do it though.

autozone does like a free diognostic test and that should tell you what cylinder is missing

So, after searching I found some info on using a volt meter. THe problem is it's not clear as to what I'm looking for. I have numbers but what numbers mean good or bad?

try this, you have a misfire you said? If a coil is in fact not working this is the way to find out which one.

-remove bolts so that coils can be easily removed, but dont remove them.
-turn car on.
-start by removing 1 ignition coil at a time.
-if the engine begins to bog or idle rough, put coil back in because its fine.
-if you remove a coil and it does not affect the engine or idle at all, it is a bad coil. Replace it.

I hope that helps. There are 6 coils and the back one are hard to get at. I recommend that you do this when your engine has been sitting for awhile so its not hot when you start it. Do the back ones first because the front ones will be easy to get at even if the engine starts to warm up.

If you have never replaced your coils, its a good idea to just replace them all. While your at it change your plugs too, since it will take you an extra 5 min per plug with the coils already out. eventually, all your coils will probobly go bad and you wont want to do this every time.

hanks for the input.

I can do this with the front three. Of course the resr three I don't think I can get at with the VQ35 given the intake. But half isn't bad, and will atleast get me half way there.

well i'm pretty sure you can even with the 3.5, I just know its harder then doing it with the 3.0. Hopefully someone with a 3.5 can chime in how to access the rear 3.

thanks merovi,

I took a good look at the rear three, and I you are right. They can be gotten to, but not easy.

Only way I'm seeing is by removing the intake manifold.
If there is a better way, great! I don't think there is. I want to change my spark plugs soon (getting close to the end of their life)

I am having the same problem. Dropping car off tomorrow morning to have it checked out. I am pretty sure its the coils due to the sputtering at start up and the flashing CEL I get sometime.
