Y pipe on VQ35 questions
First of all I want my car to remain quiet and dont really want a cat back. So my question is this.... Is getting a Y pipe still a worthwhile investment for some more hp even with the rest of the exhaust stock??? Has anyone else done this? IF so, does the car remain pretty quiet and are the gains in power noticeable? thanks

it makes power, not a whole lot, i did 218whp/228tq in my 02 6spd with a cattman y and WAI. i think if you add the b-pipe you will get a quieter g35/z exhasut note. dont bother with the rear section, its only good for making noise..

"I'll point out that, inverse to their 95-01 VQ30DE counterparts, the VQ35DE Maximas actually make more power from the catback than the y-pipe. Nissan upgraded the flow characteristics of the y-pipe when they installed the larger engine, but they didn't touch the stock catback so it went from fairly adequate to pretty restrictive."
Sooooo you may want to rethink a Catback regarding the noise, I have a Frankencar catback and it's barely any louder than stock at all, my Injen is waaay louder. I have never yet had a passenger notice that I have an aftermarket exhaust from the sound only by looking at the tips. I understand the Cattman catback is marginally louder than the Frankencar, so I'd recommend that would be the way to go, especially since Frankencar's are unavailable.

I have a dyno jpeg and Excel spreadsheet from Brian showing a peak 4.6hp/8.4lb-ft gain for Y-pipe on the 4AT 02-03 Maxima, with the Y-pipe being the only mod. However, the whp gain between the 4k-5k rpm range averages 9.2whp with a 15.8whp increase over stock at 4400rpm alone (@ the same rpm, there is an 18.9wtq gain over stock). Again, this is for the 4AT 5.5G....I imagine the 6MT would show slighty better gains.
The Cattman Y pipe may not be as effective on the 5.5G Maxima as it is with the 4G and 5G but, it seems to work plenty well for me.
