Did it on an older max of mine and it did absolutely nothing. Not worth the time and effort to cut it off and hoping that you dont f the maf up. The part cost way to much for the 5.5 gen max to screw with it believe me.

i remember this from the past on greghome.com maf screen removal i can see the idea behind it straightening the air but it also has to be a form of restriction. since i have a vafc2 and wideband, it may be interesting to remove it and see if it affects a/f at all. if it does then try tuning by most likely adding some fuel if it would infact increase airflow. i have had plans for a while to put a larger maf tube on either from pvc or a bmw maf tube (80 or 82mm), of which neither would have the screen.

the screen serves a purpose do not take it out.
it divides the air evenly in to the maf tube/housing.

the screen's other purpose is to stop larger particles from entering the throttle body, in the event that you use a poor-quality filter or something and part of filter itself (esp. if you use a foam filter) disintegrates or rips off...the screen could stop it from getting into the engine.

sr20den has a pvc maf tube with no screen. i dont see it hurting him any. the few times i have removed my filter, i have noticed a buildup on the screen which i would guess is k&n oil. the updated maf has the wire built up higher in the housing so i am not as worried about it harming that. if it does get up to it then ill just spray it down like i did with the old style sensor.
