Question On Codes/Check Engine

I haven't done it on my 02 yet but remember doing it on my 99 I had. I've gotten the service engine soon light and it comes on and off every once and a while. I am in fact using the k&n drop in filter, and did recently re-charge it but always make sure to clean it out well and not to over-oil. Curious as to whether or not I have to get the computer to pull the code or can do it myself?

go to autozone or pep boys...they can pull the code on the OBD2 scanner, and usually don't charge. Then look the code up in the 5th gen stickies to see what it is.
