Tired of saggy spare tire covers? Step inside

I did this a while ago but never showed it off. It's a great solution to the crappy hardboard Nissan uses for the spare tire cover...lightweight and extremely effective. Looks pretty too!

I did the full writeup in the audio forum, so here's the link. Feel free to post comments!

I am considering manufacturing/selling these for a nominal fee if there's enough interest.

Looks nice. Nicer than the cardboard I use when I put my summer tire/stock wheel in there as a winter spare. The stock hardboard doesn't fit then. Don't know that your creation would fit either, but it does look nice. I'd be interested if the fee is nominal enough.

it look good. Not bad, I'm looking into a possiblity of getting a mold made out of plastic form to not only cover the tire but support the floor of the trunk as well.

Yea, mine does both. Plastic would be even lighter, and just as sturdy.

i was thinking about cutting 2 rectangles one closest to the rear seats and one over the spare tire. But this sounds like a good idea. Does ur sub box still slide around with the factory carpet mat?

Are u the guy i talked to who was from rutgers? Im in tinton falls near Long Branch and Eatontown( kno that area?). U local around here? Im thinkin about doing this.

How did you fit a full size spare in there? Does it stick out from one end? I've been wanting to do that but I want the tire level.

I have a full-size spare (one of my track wheels) in there....it fits, but does stick up higher than the rest of the trunk (particularly since the tire is a 245)...oh well...

Interesting thoughts with a full size. Currently my design is for donuts...I will try to find someone with a full size to take some measurements. The recessed box would just have to not be as deep.

Another problem that exists is that different users have different size tires.

Josh, your full size tire actually creates a bulge in the middle of the trunk?

yeah, but it's a 245/45/17 on a 17x8 wheel, so it's a bit wider than a stocker 225/50/17 on a 17x7 wheel....it sticks up about 1 1/2" above the rest of the floor..

Interesting. Next time I'm doing a suspension for someone with oem wheels I'll ask to throw one in my car to take some measurements. As of right now I think production of these will be for those with donut sized spare tires.

1/4 MDF with original crap board underneath, works pretty well with minimal weight addition. This with a 15" sub, amp, amd weighty box on top with no sag.

stock wheels do the same thing...i think the 5th gen base SE and GLE (and 5.5 gen GXE) 16" wheels with something like a 205 or 195 tire would probably fit in there, but i'm not gonna be the first to spend money to find it out

You can count me in on this one for a 5th gen nice job. I notice that you live in central NJ, I could pick it up. Add me to your list, I was thinking of building something myself but would prefer to buy one.

FYI: I have the stock 5.5 gen wheel in there (still has the original Craptenza if you can believe it!). Sticks up 1/2" or so, but once the carpet is on it, you can hardly tell at all. Besides the fact that I don't have to deal with the cardboard, if stuff hits the fan, I have a full-size spare.

Hey man, no problem. As the first post states in the other thread (http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?p=5061250), I need about 2-3 weeks to get them fabricated and shipped. The latest update is that today I am ordering the wood, and hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow or Thursday. This week/weekend I shall start cutting them out and building. I'd like to get them shipped in the next 2-3 weeks. Go ahead and shoot the paypal over and add yourself to the list.
